I hope someone has some idea what this is cus I'm freaking out!

Picking out my horses feet today one of his frogs just started crumbling white spongy stuff. It just kind of broke away. It's now happening in 3 of his feet and I don't know what it is or what to do.

He is shod all round. Lives out 24/7. It has been wet a few days and the ground is clay. I pick his feet out at least once a day and after he's been ridden. Farrier is coming on Friday and my vets off this week.

Any idea what it might be or what to do?

Thanks

sounds like a bit of thrush! if farrier coming fri get him to trim the rot away. wash with saline solution or hibiscrub, then spray with iodine, or peroxide or thrush buster for a few days, or sheep footrot spray. Ask your farrier for his opinion on why/treatment. dont panic easily sorted/treated.

Oh thank you! I've got myself in such a tizz over this. I suspected thrush but he's my first horse, I've only had him 4 weeks and it's all still new and scary! Will hang on till Friday and see what farrier says. Thanks again.

This is normal! If it is very smelly it could be thrush my blacksmith tells us to spray with a watered down dettol etc, but if your unsure ask your blacksmith when he is next there, my horses frogs have all shedded and bits are coming off, make sure you pick his feet out and keep on clean bedding good luck x

Thank you all. It looks very dramatic to be just shedding. Feet get picked everyday and no bedding to keep clean - he lives out. Just today to go then hopefully the farrier can put my mind at rest. Thanks again x
