anyone got one?. waiting for the vet to phone , my 13 yr old cat had a fit Monday night, took him to the vets Tuesday morning, hes hyperthyroid anyway, but needed his meds upping . vet said he wanted to test for aids...

I had a feral tom tested when we first moved to our farm and he was positive, he was pts though as he had other nasty health issues, but I'm sure most of the feral population round here have it and as all mine are feral rescues and mostly tom cats who we trapped as 1-8yr old cats so I'm sure they probably do too. Doesn't bother me as long as the cats are neutered, happy and you're aware that when they get a cold or infection it means anti-b's are needed just to give them a helping hand even for a seemingly mild bug, although doesn't always work as we had a 5yr old who was very inbred and was never a particularly healthy cat, he got a cold one winter and then it progressed to liver failure despite anti-b's and he had to be pts. Some of our ferals have lived into their 20's including 2 of the ones which came with our farm and were not neutered when the tom cat was about so it's not something I'd panic about tbh if he does come back as positive.

I had a little girlie with FIV. Another cat came into the garden. She challenged it and by the sounds of it, got bitten. 
She was 14 at the time.
We found out when she went in for dental work. Her teeth had never been good as she had a difficult start in life and her immune system was compromised anyway.
We had 4 other cats at the time. Vets opinion was to PTS immediately or keep her separated in a room for the rest of her life
Lets just say it was a very short, to the point convo between us!
Cleo went on to have another 3 years of reasonably healthy, very happy life.
If your cat is positive I would suggest asking for Interferon and getting to see a homeopath as well. It can be managed.

Some years ago we got a cat from one of the cat rescue places. He was supposed to have been injected against FIV but sadly he was infected and despite our best efforts just got thinner and thinner and had to be pts.
I was very sad as I am not really a cat person but he was a lovely cat and the children were quite young at the time and were very upset too.

good news tests come back negative.. got to go back in 2 weeks, hes going to check his blood pressure.. then go from there..

As far as I am aware there are no vaccines available in Europe against FIV. There is one in the USA but I think it has had somewhat mixed results. I suspect that maybe your cat had FeLV which is able to be vaccinated against but of course that would not work if the cat was infected prior to vaccination or if the vaccination was not kept up and the cat had exposure to an infected cat. Sorry that you lost your cat. It is a heartbreaking disease.
