I wondered if you wise ones would offer your thoughts.
On Tuesday night I took Georgie with his mate into the hay field for a canter. Due to Georiges lack of balance in the school and no off road riding it had been a while since we had been for a canter - certainly not since we had the new saddle.
Within two strides G started bucking and I went flying over his head. Hmmm - not like him at all. So gets back on and try again. Trotted, fine, asked for canter - que bucking and me flying off again (my own fault I have a tendancy to tip forward). Odd me thinks, once - excitement perhaps? twice - is there something else going on? Get my friend up as by this point I'm feeling a tad sore. Hold her horse for her, she takes G away, turns back and starts trotting towards us, all fine, asked for canter, he slams on breaks and bunny hops. Ok I think there is defo something not right her so take him home.
What I wonder is going on? Is it his back? Or is he objecting to the new saddle?
Have back lady coming on Friday morning but YO has suggested that I ought to try and find out if it is the new sadde he is objecting to. He suggests lunging him in old and new in canter and see what he does. If no reaction, get on him on lunge in both old and new and see what happends.
Thoughts please?

I really hoped you wouldnt say that

Definitely sounds like the saddle. Lunging him in the saddle but without a rider probably won't show you anything as it's probably the weight of the rider on the new saddle that is causing the problem. Personally I would get in touch with whoever fitted the saddle - they clearly haven't done a good job.

Exactly the same thing happened to us last week - it was the saddle...........

Get your saddler back up and ask them to bring something different for him.

I wouldn't say that. It may fit perfectly - but for whatever reason the horse doesn't like the feel of it.

Cant do that. Its a wow. My OH will divorce me if I have to change saddle!

Yes, but Jac, surely it was fitted for you? If that's the case it's part of the job of the saddler to come back to you if you have a problem with it. It may be a simple case of adjusting something on the saddle itself - or it simply may not be suiteable for your horse - in which case any master saddler worth his wait will take it back and give you a full re-fund or a different saddle to a similar value.

No point spending several hundreds of pounds on a saddle you can't ride in........

Indeed it was fitted for me and I love it. Should I do as YO suggested and try both the new and old on the lunge to see how he reacts? YO has a test pilot that is happy to get up on the lunge.

If it were me - I would just ring the saddler and tell him horse not happy.

I would try the old saddle again. If there isnt a problem then get straight back to your wow fitter. It could well be the headplate is slightly tight or the panels dont suit.

I would be very surprise if the fitter cant sort it out but bunny hopping is a sign of back probs so dont dismiss this either.

Well I have the back lady coming out tomorrow morning anyway now so shall leave that as is. Will try him on the lunge with old and new tonight and see what happens. Have just left a message with wow fitter informing her of my problem just so that she has prior notice if I do need to get her back.

WOW saddles are fantastic - love mine! - but I have heard that some of their registered fitters/suppliers are better than others. Your horse is obviously unhappy with the saddle so get the fitter back - its their responsibility to make sure the saddle fits your horse perfectly. WOWs are so adjustable I'm sure with a few tweaks your problem will be sorted.

take him to the field and canter him in the old saddle and see what happens - put a neck strap on for added security, hold onto it and hope for the best

Seriously tho, id try cantering him in the same field in the old saddle aswell........

Ditto PGirl

Did he look like he was in pain - you mentioned that he hasnt cantered or been out for a while - could this have had anything to do with it ?

Defo go back to the same field and have another canter and see what he does!
