Scare mongering of the worst degree. I am currently doing further research and hope to attend some meetings as I will not sit quietly by and let Defra think they can cull horses willy nilly - when the time comes the equestrian world needs to be united and make a stand and push for any outbreak to be managed to ALL of our benefit.

If it helps, it is really difficult to get a horse into the UK who hasn't been quarantined and also tested for AHS, not to mention, Glanders, Dourine and EIA.

We are currently in the process of importing our horse from Turkey and it is proving very tricky.

She requires 2 tests for AHS and they must be 21 days apart, the last one being within 10 days of entry to the UK, both with negative results.

They are all to be done in approved labs, preferably at one in the UK but they do have approved labs across the globe.

There is a vaccine to protect against it but I don't know much about the vaccine.

Weezy, can we vaccinate to prevent an outbreak?

If we can maybe we should be pushing for everyone to be vaccinated????

Just been talking to my mate about this, we would wait outside the stable with guns to shot any vet / defra that came to cull our babies

It's not so much the horse-to-horse spread that's the problem though, is it? If it's spread by midges then it would be very difficult to control.

Hopefully this is all just going to stay hypothetical...

Not sure how long it would take a mosquito to fly from Africa but they only have a life span of one month, and only 2 of those weeks as an adult and I'm not sure they'd be inclined to come this far North!

The breeding pattern of the African Mosquito is out of synch with our native midge and I'm not sure but I wouldn't suspect there would be any cross species breeding.

I really don't think it will ever reach our shores but why don't we start a campaign to have compulsory vaccination?

I dont think European/UK farmers thought blue tongue would be much of a problem--it is. I hope the Horse Trust do carry on pushing Gov for vaccine to be available.
I think AHS is like Blue Tongue with a number of serotypes so no use stock piling because it may be the wrong vaccine. Hopefully the work by Merial will mean that vaccine could be produced very quickly if needed.
