Female dog producing really off smell :/

My little dog is a 1 year old staff x jack russell. We have only had her since July & we was given her after the owner had mis-treated her (found through a friend of a friend)

For the last month or so she has been producing a really foul smell. I cannot find where it is coming from, all I know is that its that bad it makes the whole house reek of it & its so vile it makes me heave :/

I have kind of noticed a pattern that she does it when she is excited ie if we are taking her out for a walk but then soemtimes it just comes on for no apparent reason.

We do not know if she has been spayed, we were advised to leave it until she had a season but so far we have not seen one from her & like I say she has just gone over the year mark (if the old owner was right about her age) so not sure if that is having something to do with this off smell. She has a very tiny scar under her belly but I am not sure if this would be big enough to suggest she has been spayed. (my old dog had quite a long line from her spaying but then I suppose it goes by the vet that has done it??) also Im not sure if its in the right place as its quite far down from her "bits"!

Has anyone got any suggestions, seen/smelt anything like this before??
Trying to save a vet bill just to get it checked out but if it comes to it will get her checked over.

Anal glands a defo possibility. But also if she hasn't been spayed you need to watch for Pyometra - a serious uterine infection that can be open or closed. If open smelly discharge from Vulva and needs to see vet asap. If closed you have a very sick dog but no outward signs of what problem is. But if it has been going on a while and she isn't off colour, panting ( sometimes a sign of pain in dogs), and her colour (gums) is good, then hopefully it's her Anal glands an unless you fancy getting covered in stinky goop best let the vet do it :D so I'm afraid you may well be in for a vets bill but anal glands should be included in the consult fee which around here is anything for £20 to £30 ( phone around to see who charges what in your area)

Thanks for all the replies, definitely sounds like it is the anal glands producing it!
She has no discharge coming from there or vulva & she is happy enough in herself to rule out any kind of infection (she is full of beans!)
I cannot really describe the smell, it is kind of fishy but it is so vile it just makes you want to heave & get the hell out of there so you dont really take the smell in :o :/

Yep, Anal Glands ;-)
Get the vet to show you how to squeeze them - if they become a problem there are surgical options as a very last resort. Diet can also help improve the situation.

That could be interesting, have seen the videos on you tube but dare'nt do it myself!!!
She is quiet a fussy eater so we have only found one food (Bakers small dog beef variety) that she eats so tackling her diet is going to be a tricky one. Hopefully its just a one off & it doesnt happen again!
 
Take her off bakers slowly not the best food, anel glands do empty themself normally when they go for a number 2 :) if she starts licking alot or chewing herself take her to the vet to have them done as they do become infected.
 
I had a feeling it would be the Bakers, she is so difficult to feed as she is so fussy :(
Anyone have any suggestions as to what is a good feed, preferably that is slightly similar to the Bakers?? Will ask at the vet when we take her as well.
 
I would also suggest if the smell continues, although it does sound like anal glads, I would get her checked by the vet.

My staffie is one of the unfortunates and had reoccuring infections in the anal glands so needed sugery :eek:

She has been on many foods as very fussy, very sensitive tummy with many issues over the years and after trying most of the expensive foods, I have actually found the best for her to be Dr Johns silver medal :cool: although i have to add hot water to soften slightly and makes it more yummy :p

I had a disaster with James Wellbeloved (chronic sickness & the runs), and they were ever so helpful.
They will send you samples to try - as should most dog food companies.
Apparently Arden Grange is good, as is Wainrights and Royal Canine - although i've not tried any of them.

Arden Grange is quite a good food for fussy eaters. Also make sure if she doesn't eat it, take it away after 10mins, she'll soon get the message that nothing else tastier is going to come along!!

I'd get her to the vet though to check her anal glands but also check for a pyo - dogs can still be ok and have a uterus full of puss - and it can be fatal so worth ruling out!!

We always give our dogs raw bones - it makes them poop golfballs:D - so definitely helps keep the anal glands clear and their tear ducts!!!:D:p - keeps their teeth clean too!
