Don't worry, its easy! You will get allocated a fence, and should have at least one other person judging the fence with you. It is your responsibility to confirm that each horse has jumped the fence OK, or to report if it has refused, run out, circled, fallen (very rare!) etc

Not sure quite how it will operate at your event as I have always done BE events - in that case you have a v easy book to complete to record all of the above, plus a stopwatch to confirm what time the horse passed your fence, but doubt it will be as formal as that for you. You might also have a radio (to report on the above to the XC control) which is really easy to operate, and you should have 4 different coloured flags to summon assistance if required.

Most importantly the event organisers will hold a briefing at the beginning of the day for all fence judges and will explain exactly how things work - enjoy, it is good fun if the weather is nice

Im sure they will give you a briefing when you get there, dont panic! failing that, choose teh one you think was prettiest as it whizzed past and give that one clear.....only joking! at most events you are given a book of cards where you have to fill in the rider number and penalties occured at that fence, as well as the time the got to the fence. if there is a hold on course then you might be responsible for holding another competitior which would involve taking the time at which you stopped tehm at a particular poiint on course, and the time they set off again!

If you are at a fence like the water and teh horse is being a bit naughty, you might have to shout 'first refusal' when it steps backwards to make tehm aware you are giving them a stop, it might pee them off at the time, but it stops them getting a shock when they get to the score board!

Hope that helps, but you will be able to aks the orginisors lots of questions before you start

You'll get briefed before you.....

Tis great fun - FMC and I did one earlier this year and it was a laugh - appeals greatly to my love of walkie talkies and being a power junky
