Well *usually* you have a sheet with competitor numbers going vertically down the page, and then fence numbers going horizontally across the page. For example, number 5 refuses at fence 12, you go to the correct box and put in 40 penalties

you hav a sheet and on the left hand side it says competito number and you write that there then the sheet will have clear, 1st refusal run out or circle, 2nd refusal run out or circle and 3rd refusal run out or circle (at all the ones ive been to you tick which ever one is relevent) or it will have 1st fall of rider, 2nd fall of rider, fall of horse (again tick if relevent) and then i think it has another one cannot remember what it is though and then the last collum is remarks...

You also need the ability not to go to the loo for about 12 hrs....some pre-event dehydration may be required (or pray for that fence near the hedge!).

You can always ask for a 'straight forward' fence rather than a complicated coffin or complex of fences.
Its a pretty boring thing to do though, I have done it several times and find it hard not to nod off if I am sat in the car nice and warm!!!!!

I did this last year and really enjoyed it, except for the mother who queried my judgement! (There's always one!) Don't be bullied- it's not rocket science, just stick to the rules and you'll be fine. Enjoy!
