Can someone tell me what v a fence energiser needs to be?? I'm very confused as some are advertised at being 1000v and suitable for horses, some 1000v and not... and some at 7,500v plus. Obviously there's a huge price difference too.

Are there any energisers on the market at around the £50 mark?? If not, wheres the cheapest place to buy??

any help would be gratefully recieved

Interesting to read your post! Sadly you are buying on cost! Which I realise a lot of people will do, BUT, what you have to realise is that you cannot buy on cost with electric fence energisers. Each energiser gives out a different power output and I will try and summarise in the hope it helps.

!) Ignore VOLTS...all fencers will give an output under no load...IE not connected to a fence of between 6000 and 9000 volts or 6KV to 9KV which means the same

2) JOULES is the important thing. Simplistically, the easy way to describe a Joule, is to compare JOULES to boxers.

A low Joule output fencer is a "Prince Naseem" it packs a lightweight punch against a lightweight opponent. IE a low joule fencer is OK for a strip across a paddock, using tape, with good insulation and horses with no rugs on. The lightweight punch behind the volts will cope with the task.

A high Joule fencer is a "Mike Tyson", it packs a heavyweight punch, which will combat rugged up horses, long lengths of fence and some vegetation overgrowth and still deliver a "knockout blow".

Similar to boxers, you wouldnt put Prince Naseem against Tyson, or vice versa. So pick your fencer, based on what you want it to do, not how much you can spend. For your fifty quid today, is a total waste if your horses are trotting of through "farmer Dans cabbage field tomorrow!"

Please feel free to PM me for any advice. I have been in the trade for 15 years and am quite happy to give impartial advice. No I wont tell you who I work for and I wont push my firms brand. I am quite happy to give advice for you to make an informed decision.

All the best
