A couple of months ago my granddaughter announced there were 3 black kitchens in one of the farm buildings. We didn’t take her seriously but it appears she was right and at least one appears to have taken up residence in my hay shed. Apparently they move between the neighbours cattle court which is currently empty and my shed. We’ve agreed that they might be useful in feeding on mice/rats/pigeons but l’m not awfully keen on cats and certainly don’t want to end up with 33! Dont know where they've come from there aren’t any other cats nearby. There used to be a feral cat who visited from time to time within a couple of miles but l’ve not seen her for a long time. Anyone else dealt with this, other than being quite small they don‘t look in bad condition. What to do?

Rings cat protection or similar and get them to bring some traps. Trap them, neuter them, re release.
Feed a little dry food, contrary to old fashioned belief they hunt better with a little food for energy! Leave water out especially when very hot or very cold. Give them some shelter if possible (an old shed works well).

Cats protection will organise free neutering for feral cats

A feral cat moved onto the yard and had kittens. Cats protection provided traps and they were caught, neutered and returned. Definitely a reduction in mice. Farmer feeds them and they will get close enough to him for that but they generally run when they see anyone else.

Definitely get neutered. We had five kittens appear at our yard. Over the next two years we ended up with 50 very feral cats. Eventually we got them all caught in traps and sorted at the vets. Then re released. Some stayed. Some legged it never to be seen again after release ?. I did catch three young feral kittens via a crate. and took them home. Popped in a dog crate and daily handled. They turned into loving babies. Kept all three myself. Jasper found in barn and now all grown up.
