Fergs in the forest...

Gorgeous pics, you both look like you're having a ball :)

Coincidentally, I've been thinking about you today - remember a certain Highland x PRE youngster from a couple of years ago? I never quite got him out of my head, he's come back onto my radar, he's now three, I'm talking to his owner by email and I'm about a gnat's whisker away from going to have a look at him :D

Gosh really?! You clearly should! I was thinking about him this morning, as it happens - I wish I had room (and funds!) for another, but realistically, was never going to work, no matter how much I fancied him! I'd love to know who he's with and how he's getting on. Mind you, at 14hh and finer than my pure breds, he'd realistically never have taken my weight, so perhaps just as well...

What crackin pics, looks like you really were having fun and Fergs sure is a handsome chap, Can I ask a question, as a fellow highland owner, In your banner he looks as if hes really light in your hand and beautifully balanced. I struggle to get mine to move off my leg and he is very heavy in the hand. I dont want to create a really bouncy pony as Im just a happy hacker and getting on a bit, but I would like a slightly more responsive one. Have you got any tips for "lifting him up" a bit?

Thanks :) Errr, I think schooling is the answer. I had the advantage with F that he's always been my ride - I never had to undo any previous training and bad habits (other than my own errors!). It's always harder to undo a habit that not teach it in the first place.

I have to say, I think a lot of it is asking for something and really meaning it - I don't expect to have to ask twice, so if I don't get an instant response to my leg, he feels my whip or spur. Once he's forward, it's a lot easier to harness the energy and keep him up in front. I do a lot of lateral work too to keep him soft in front and supple. All stuff that can be done out hacking too, if you don't school though. I think it's just consistency, timing and really meaning it. Good luck :)
