hi, some of you may have read my previous post about finding a ferret well we still have her and we have named her honey. we are unsure if she is preggers and will have to wait and see. my question is this should she be kept with another ferret/polecat ? ifso should she be with a male or female.
thanks for help.

Hello !!

I would deffo suggest keeping her with another girl (unless she's neutered). ferrets really do need to have company, and are very happy together - my two girls (both separate rescues) are inseperable. They are a total joy to watch, tho be aware that they play fight a lot !!

As for whether she's preggars, I think you'd have to get a vet to check. If she is, contact a rescue asap for advice on rehoming the kitts, but there you will have your second fuzzy ready made!! If she is not, and is not neutered, she will come into season in the next few months - her vulva will swell to about the size of a 5p. If this happens, she needs to have a jill-jab at the vet to bring her out of season, asap, or they remain in season, and it can cause infection.

But def get a second. I stick with girlies now, cos even when neutered boys do have a stronger smell (much as I adore them), and mine are house ferrets. I am after a rescue kitt this year, but will have to sneak her in as hubs says I'm getting carried away again (my record was 12 at one time - NOT in the house, lol). I've never had a kitt before.....

Hope that helps - how's Honey getting on anyway ?? sm x

Good point ! did the girls get hammered to death tho - I nearly got a boy last year, but he took rather too much interest and my girl got very distressed :eek::eek:

honey is getting on very well , we have got more confident handling and playing with her. she seems happy in her bigger cage and we have given her an old fleece hat, an old boot (fleece lined) and some tube too hide in . she also has hay and shavings in the bottom part of the cage with a litter tray in the middle section. i think my mum is wondering about having her neutered if she isnt preggers(or done later if she is). we asked our vet about jill jab and found they charge £22. so wondered if it would be better to have her neutered and then not have too worry anymore. i didnt know if she would fight with another girl. i know my local rescue have lots of males that they have had neutered so wondered if a male would be o.k.
she loves to dig in my mums flower pots so we give her an old washing up tub full of earth and she makes a mess!!!
i am looking to get her a harness of some sort but i am unsure of what type or size would be best. as she is a polecat/ferret.
thanks again.

Girls play fight, but so do boys and girls - it's all part of the fun of being a ferret - practising attacking a rabbit or something (nice). If there's a boy on offer, go for it, get one that has been neutered a while if you can, cos the hormones will have started to settle.

As for getting your girl done, def do so if the vet gives the ok. One of mine is of unknown age so the vet's not keen to put her under, but the jill jab here is only £8. Much better neutered tho.

I got both my harness off ebay if that helps. But be warned - you will have a nightmare putting the damned thing on, and the only way my girls will walk in any direction is if i constantly squeak a toy in front of me !! God help me if they find a rabbit scent or hole. And they can escape from them :D

One of my girls favourites is racing up the stairs, they also like towel - surfing on a lino floor...:D

Shysmum ours were rather noisy during the in season periods but he did have six girl friends, so hopefully they coped.
Ours did live outside in a large aviary type enclosure, with access to hutch.
Agree about harness, hopeless things.

I would defo get her neutered, at least you know she cant get preggers then, regarding a vasectomised hob....i would'nt go there, they still have all the hormones rampaging at mating time and if you have ever seen ferrets mate it would put you off for life, its not very nice to watch or hear and they are very rough, to be honest its basically rape!!!

They should always have company being the social critters that they are, but you will always ger ferrets that are loners, one of my 6 is one but she lives indoors so she gets plenty of social time with me.

Also something to remember...im not sure on the size of your cage but the recomended size for 2 ferrets to live in is a 6 x 4 hutch/run.

Forgot to say..re the harness, go for the 'H' type, putting them on is a doddle if you put a wee drop of ferretone/veg oil on their tummy while sitting on your lap they are so busy licking it off you will have harness on in seconds, good luck and enjoy, ferrets are a very underated pet who will give you yrs of love/laughter and joy.
