Was I being naive in my thoughts? Just had a play with quotes and am getting in excess of £1200 for a 12tonne lorry...I was thinking it'd be less than that

Just being a geek and seeing what it'd cost to go to Tattersalls for the CCIJ* next year if I felt we were ready. It says in the schedule about contacting the organiser RE reduced ferry rates, but I can't ring her now because she'll think I'm mad!
Anyone else done overseas and how much has it cost?

It was something around £6-700 for a 8m-ish long lorry a few years ago (they do it on length not weight). Also depends on route - some are more expensive than others. Cheapest is Stranraer-Belfast, but it's a heck of a long way up there, as Joss will tell you

Best idea is to find one or two other people and share

Oh yes, and they do often get reductions from a ferry company - usually around 20% off...

That's probably why ours is so expensive - just over 11m or thereabouts. Trying to find someone to share with is interesting as it's the same weekend as Houghton this year...[well, next year, but you get my drift.] I know M was planning on going for the 2*, but is going from a totally different port.

ETA - reckon T & S will be ready for it K?

I have a friend in Ireland, when she comes the other way with racehorses she hires a 3.5t lorry as it work out cheaper when you take into account ferry/hire and diesel than bringing her big lorry! She obviously has to advantage of racecourse accommodation to stay in one she arrives though.

If you need somewhere lovely to stable before getting on the ferry; give me a shout. I'm based on a yard thats 10 mins from Holyhead.

PS Its about £5-£600 for a 5 horse plus living lorry.

When we go the other way we get a transport company to book our ferry for us as they get MUCH better rates since they use the routes all of the time- might be worth asking around to see if anyone you know has any contacts and doing it that way.
