Anyone know about amounts of fertiliser per acre? Doing this for the first time and trying to research before phoning various companies. Also any particular sort of fertiliser, we are on very chalky and flint soil. Thanks!

The easiest thing to do would be to phone a few local friendly farmer, they'll tell you how much you need and know what the soil is like localy and prob do the job for you. most farmers buy there fert in bulk so would get it cheaper.

Depends what you want to achieve - and when you're putting it on. For fast grass growth in spring either straight N or 20.10.10 - at a rate of 1 - 2 bags (50kg) per acre. But that's a TOTAL no-no if you have ponies or fatties! And I'm not sure you can still get the damn stuff in 50kg bags - last lot I got was horribly expensive - the alternative is half-tonne bags which means serious equipment for spreading.

On a chalky/flint soil I'd be lookingto add as much organic matter as possible - would a friendly local dairy farmer be looking for somewhere to spread muck??

As said above, depends what you want to achieve, is it for grazing or is some of it for your own hay? Straight N would be the best bet depending on your soil type, its expensive how ever you buy it so you want to be doing your sums first!!

don't waste any money at all until you have had a soil sample done and actually know what is needed. The most important thing with grazing is to get it to as close to a pH of 6.6 as possible. which may only require lime or it may need a high level of nitrogen which is extremely bad for ponies and fatties. but until a full analysis is done you won't know what is the best solution for your fields.
