Fertilizer

My yard is going to have the fields fertilized in the very near future and I'm dead worried that it's going to cause boy to go down with laminits! He's not had it in two years but previously was really prone at anytime of the year. I moved him to current field in summer 2006 and he's been out 12hrs a day there.

The pasture now is old so its the only thing i can think of for why he's not had an attack. Before he only had to look at grass! He spent four years on restricted turn out and in a muzzle. I don't want to have to go back to that again!

Anyone been through this.......

I think you're right to worry. Last year our field was fertilised and it was the first year I've ever had to muzzle my horse - she put on weight rapidly despite regular hard exercise and looked awful. She is not laminitic (although I am amazed she didn't come down with it last year, despite everything I did to try and keep her weight down). In previous years she had of course put on weight in the summer but nothing like that scale.

Would the YO not consider leaving a 'fatty paddock' unfertilised for you and any other laminitics? I know what you mean about the muzzles and whatnot, it is the biggest pain and the horses hate it.

Unfortunately its not your average yard. Six horses on about 30 acres of grazing and some run down stables. We all lease it between us from some building contracters who will eventually bulid on our lovely fields. Its the kind of situation where you just all mull in and no one is in charge really and if one person says lets fertilize the field evryone goes "Yay lets" apart from me......(I'm the only laminitic one!) hmmm will have to put up a small paddock just in case i think.
