Ok - following on from my previous posts - I realise that I have missed the boat for the weed spraying - so am going to have the fields topped..... but my question is ? is it ok to seed and fertilize now or just fertilize and perhaps seed August/early Sept?

I will be having the fields sprayed for weeds in the Autumn..... Sept time..

Any help and advice appreciated....

there is an old farmers saying
"spray in June, they'll come back soon, spray in July they'll surely die"
My OH always says the best time to spray the pastures is in July after he's topped them.

It's also best to have your soil analyzed before putting fertiliser on. You need to know the correct balance of minerals/nutrients present in your pasture before putting anything on. Putting nitorgen based fertiliser on year after year is a waste of time and money if your pasture is not lacking this particular element. It will just create a build up in your soil.
It's always best to ask a local farmer to spray your pastures, they have access to all the powerful chemicals which you need a licence to handle, but they do the best job.

Unless there is a large amount of clover in a pasture, which will fix nitrogen, it will leach from the soil, any land that is grazed or cut on a regular basis will deplete in N. We have run an ag contracting business for 20 years and would only have grassland tested for ph, if this is low it will knock the grass and encourage b/cups so the putting N on will not help.
