Just moved to a yard were i have to fertilize my own fields and weed them. I understand i have to do the soil sample does anyone know were i can get this done, and when are the best times to fertilize can i do it this year?

Wyvale do a soil testing kit. We use a 20/10/10 root fertaliser on our fields in the spring, although we were late this year and did not do until the first week in may, fields have to be left for a minimum of 4 days and so long as the fertaliser has gone into the ground, with either a heavy downpour of rain or very heavy frost/dew then they are okay to use, as to weed killer we tend to pull/dig the weeds up although with the thistles we cut them down and the horses eat them. We do our feeds every other year, it is better to under fertalise than over fertalise, we normally calculate 50kg per acre. I know someone who used double that amount on their yard and within 2 weeks the whole yard had gone down with laminitis, they only have 10 horses on their yard.

You need to go to an agricultural merchant and ask for a PH test. They will tell you what and when to collect. The test is cheap. They will then advise the best fertilizer for you, so must be informed what the land is used for. They will also advise the rate at which the selected fertilzer should be applied.

On the scale your looking at,dont bother wih testing , go for 75c kg per acre of a 20:10 :10 fertiliser.(your agricultural merchant will know what this means even if you dont.

Ph testing will be of no use for your feritilser requirement, it will only tell you if your soil is acid or alkali. If it is acidic, you will need lime , not fertiliser. Fertilising should only be done in the spring when the grass is growing, and when there is sufficient rain to wash it in.
