Hello

4 weeks ago my horse went into some fencing and cut a rear leg, fetlock, just above joint on front. At the time I was in hospital in labour, so the wound was not noticed till the afternoon, and could not be stitched as it had swollen. It was dressed and treated with a preventative ointment to prevent infection.

10 days later proud flesh had developed and the vet shaved quite a bit off (as she has done again since) and he is now being kept in whilst the wound heals. It is now about the size of a 50p (PF area), total wound site about twice the size. It is being dressed with a non adhesive pad, soffban wrap, cotton wool wrap/padding, coform bandaging, vet wrap etc - all this to prevent knocking, create pressure and prevent as much joint flexing as possible, although without casting this is not really stopping it flexing, which tbh, I do not think is slowing any healing.

My concern is this - he is big, 17hh, and also 18 years old. He has never really been kept in,, and I have noticed he is stiffening up (unavoidable I know). He hates being stabled and will go off like a rocket as soon as he gets the chance - we will give some sedolin to initially turn out, but that will wear off:( I'm worried about tendon damage etc.

Does anyone else have any experience of this kind of wound/treatment and was yorus in or out. Would it be daft to ask the vet if he can be out??? I'm thinking in day/out night or vice versa. Just want to keep him moving - would be tricky to walk out in hand as he's not the easiest and has some funny little things about him - being led after being boxed being his worst point.

Any experience/advice greatly appreciated

many thanks

A livery of mine had this same problem with her horse but the wound was behind the knee, so was kept in due to flexing, then had terrible problems with proud flesh, vet kept shaving it off but it kept coming back. the horse ended up being in for about 5/ 6 months while this went on. In the end she did her own research and got a product called Equaide from america, its all natural ingriedients and very easy to use. This did the trick and within 2 weeks the wound was visibily healing. I have used this on my mare and healed her wire wound very well. If you google equaide the web site should come up.

Did the vet not give you some Fucidin H cream?
That is great stuff for keeping proud flesh at bay. I should know - you can see the injury my darling late Henesy had on his fetlocks:

This was a 19 week box rest job after surgery (tendon sheath sepsis on both hinds)

The reason your vet wants restricted movement is because it can compromise the wound healing (constantly splitting open)

I think that cutting the proud flesh away and generous coatings of Fucidin H would more than sort it out.
Good luck.

Blimey how did he do this to his fetlock?

Hi
It was Xmas day 2010 when we had masses of snow on the ground. He either laid down or rolled in the field & slid backwards. His legs went through the hedge and into the stock fence behind (barbed wire on top)
We think that is what happened - all I can say is the field was like the texas chainsaw massacre as he had done both digital arteries, both tendon sheaths on both hind legs. Offside hind was worse.
He had emergency surgery Boxing Day at Bell Equine (amazing place), followed by impaction colic and then 19 weeks box rest. His treatment cost £10,000

I loved him so so much - my horse of a lifetime and I miss him every day.

He was diagnosed with Wobblers in June 2011 and pts end of August.
