Hello
4 weeks ago my horse went into some fencing and cut a rear leg, fetlock, just above joint on front. At the time I was in hospital in labour, so the wound was not noticed till the afternoon, and could not be stitched as it had swollen. It was dressed and treated with a preventative ointment to prevent infection.
10 days later proud flesh had developed and the vet shaved quite a bit off (as she has done again since) and he is now being kept in whilst the wound heals. It is now about the size of a 50p (PF area), total wound site about twice the size. It is being dressed with a non adhesive pad, soffban wrap, cotton wool wrap/padding, coform bandaging, vet wrap etc - all this to prevent knocking, create pressure and prevent as much joint flexing as possible, although without casting this is not really stopping it flexing, which tbh, I do not think is slowing any healing.
My concern is this - he is big, 17hh, and also 18 years old. He has never really been kept in,, and I have noticed he is stiffening up (unavoidable I know). He hates being stabled and will go off like a rocket as soon as he gets the chance - we will give some sedolin to initially turn out, but that will wear off
I'm worried about tendon damage etc.
Does anyone else have any experience of this kind of wound/treatment and was yorus in or out. Would it be daft to ask the vet if he can be out??? I'm thinking in day/out night or vice versa. Just want to keep him moving - would be tricky to walk out in hand as he's not the easiest and has some funny little things about him - being led after being boxed being his worst point.
Any experience/advice greatly appreciated
many thanks
