Today a farrier who hasn't been asked to trim my horses for 8 months turned up,climbed over a padlocked gate, went into my hayshed to get the headcollers and proceeded to trim my horses hooves! Apparently someone he thought was my husband had texted him. You'd have thought that after so long he would have had the sense to check up if was us or not. Apparently not. Unbelievable. I use a caring barefoot trimmer now as this particular farrier wasn't handling my ponies nicely and Eve hit one, totally unnecessary said pony stands half asleep for the barefoot trimmer. I'm bloody livid.

That's pretty shocking behaviour.

I sacked a farrier who hit a horse of mine 30 years ago. I wasn't that surprised when his name popped up in the paper last week saying he'd been convicted of assaulting his partner, he was an angry man. Angry people have no place near horses.

He did that based on that someone he thought was your husband had texted him?!? Don't tell me he asks to be paid as well?

Could he by any chance be drunk? However this ends, make sure to tell him to remove you + your husband permanently from his list of clients from now on.
Have done this, sent him a text saying he is not to attend our premises or horses anymore and his services are not required.

I’m fairly positive any farrier I’ve had out would turn up, see I wasn’t there, try and contact me before leaving again. I can’t imagine any would walk into my stables and take a head collar, catch my horse and crack at. How bizarre. Hope he’s not undone any of your trimmers good work.

How bizarre... definitely sounds like it was more intentioned than it seems.. It sounds like he is short of clients to me. I don't know a farrier with time to bother doing something like that.
My farrier is an angel, I intend to chuck an extra £20 onto the cost of my trim for today as a thankyou for putting up with Dex's first time - he wasn't bad as I have been working on it, but was a little leg wavey. I felt awful.

I’m not sure the standard is relevant. If a window cleaner rocks up and cleans my windows to a glistening shine, but I didn’t ask him to, then I’d still not be paying for a service I didn’t ask for.
I asked because tho the OP isnt paying as hasn't used that farrier for over 8 months, if what he had done was detrimental to the animals concerned, then I'd have strongly advised her to contact the WCF to lodge a complaint

Similar happened to me many years ago. It was a cytek farrier who had shod my pony, but failed to turn up for the follow up appointment. A couple of weeks later I turned up to find my shetland with four badly trimmed hooves and I mean badly. All different shapes, heights, angles. The neighbour thought I'd booked him. Bizarrely the shod pony hadn't been touched! I called the farrier to be told he'd been passing and decided to do a visit, but he couldn't see the shod pony so trimmed the shetland. Shod pony was with shetland in a 0.5 acre paddock, so I was confused as well as furious. I gave him a flea in his ear and left it at that. I then spoke to the friend who had originally recommended him and apparently he'd turned up at her place blind drunk. Mumbled something about seeing my two and nearly fell over more than once. To this day I don't know why they let him get in his van and drive away. Needless to say neither of us used him again.

🤣. We had a farrier that turned up drunk too. He lost his driving license when he got caught so his apprentice had to drive him about.
