QR - one thing i have noticed on eher alot of times is peoples reluctance to calling a vet out and instead posting on here. Maybe i am a bit soft but if my horse had anything wrong it that i wasnt 100% sure how to treat myself - i would be straight onto the phone. It really does beggar belief that people let their horses/ponies get into such a state before making the call. You can clearly see hes in pain... words fail me.
i sincereley hope for the sake of your others that you have learnt from this now!?
To explain, they normally live out 24/7, bringing them in on their own would stress them...
I don't give painkillers because I want the pain mechanism to to do its job - that is, to encourage them to rest the lame leg.
But then, I am quite good at guessing what's wrong with them...so would get a vet if it was anything serious.
S
my point was that you should know your own horse.. but with an injury like that.. i dont understand why you would leave it.
Obviously i have had a few times where mine has been "lame" called the vet and and it turned out he was faking it. But i now know when something requires a vet and when it doesnt.. some cases are not rocket science.
I agree with the pain mechanism, it is there for a reason. I dont always call the vet immediately if a leg is swollen or a horse is a bit lame. However if the horse was 8/10 lame I would call the vet. I also cant see the pic/video. Anything near a joint would cause me concern but that is because I am experienced. 20 years ago I would not have known.
I think that Sophie is very inexperienced and had no idea of the possible seriousness of a joint becoming infected. Let's hope it is not as bad as it may appear, the vet is called and it clears up so the gelding gets to his new home safely.
I think Sophie has been a little niave in not calling the vet out, but she has said she will in the morning.
Re her getting a taxi to the field, how many people keep cash in the house? i certainally don't! and many taxis don't take cards..
No-one's such an expert in the equestrian world that they know everything. Some know more than others, but we're all stilll learning. What sophie assumed to be a graze she now knows could be worse, but Thank God she posted the pic, because hopefully now there'll be a happy ending.
Maybe some people should take themseves off their pedestals and actually try to help educate others. Throwing insults round just comes across as childish and arrogant. I can understand why Sophie uses the UI button by the responses I've seen to some of her posts recently. As above, no-one is such an expert in these things that it gives them the right to be nasty and throw around personal insults. Taking the michael out of users is more likely to drive them away, when they could quite happily stay here and LEARN.

Oh Katy I really think you should get of your high horse. I've just read the post and I'm struggling to see where anyone has insulted her or how you can defend her.
As to being an expert and therefore only able to give advice you have no idea who the other posters are. It is a shame that you are happy to watch videos of neglect and then get all miffy when people give her the very good advice of calling the Vet.

I'm sorry?? Are you actually incapable of reading and understanding a post.
Where are these videos of neglect that you are stating that i have watched and got all miffy over??? I'm not a child, I don't get miffy, but I can see when someone is throwing insults around 'just because they can'.
People gave her advice to call the vet, and I assume she took that advice. No, i don't know everyone on here, but then again, we don't know Sophie, her personal circumstances etc. Quite a few people have had this horse down as dropping dead in the night.... all from one video and a vague description of the lameness and injury.
Again, i would like to see these videos of neglect (as far as I saw only ONE video has been posted on this thread and wether that is neglect is down to personal opinion) I am supposedly sticking up for
I never said I thought the horse would drop dead in the night, if you are referring to me?
I also never insulted the poster or accused her of neglect. I simply told her my story with Patches and explained that this is why the obvious injury to Bertie would be of great concern to me, as the timeline of injury to lameness, swelling etc are near identical. I will admit, realising the timeline did make me feel a sense of panic/concern for his wellbeing (much as I'd felt with Patches when the seriousness of what was happening to her hit me).
Yes, of course, I hope the horse doesn't have a serious infection in the joint or the tendon sheath. I'd be very pleased to read a post that said we'd all over reacted and Bertie is nothing more than bruised, I truly would.
I did not intend to scaremonger. I merely felt a need to impress on Sophie how an injury that I initially thought was pretty innocuous ended up requiring immediate emergency surgery.
It's wonderful to be able to air on the side of caution when things end up turning out ok. I wouldn't have wanted to be sat here reading a post in a few days, for example, that said Bertie had a tendon sheath infection and it was beyond surgical intervention (God forbid of course) and have mused to myself about how that's what I suspected it might be but I'd not been bothered to alert the poster to that possible scenario for fear of upsetting or offending her.
I have everything crossed that Bertie's problems do end to be something and nothing and he's back to normal soon.

No, i was NOT referring to you....

I never even mentioned your name, your post... and I never accused you of insulting her or accusing her of neglect. Paranoia??? Why do you feel the need to defend your post??? Unless you DID insult her of accuse her of neglect, TBH i don't know! My post had no referral to yours... why? because (I'll admit) I read the first parts of your posts saw they were simply accounts of what had happened to YOU and skipped the rest of them because I was leafing through to find out more posts from Sophie so I could find out if she HAD called the vets.
I'm not paranoid. You will note I did say "IF" you were referring to me. I realise you put QR at the top of the first post that comes up as a reply to mine but wasn't sure if you were still referring to me or not.
