Irish Travellers are a race. Pikey is a a racially abusive word against Irish Travellers. Ever feel like you're banging your head against a brick wall...?
[/ QUOTE ]
Partially in relation to your post JH because you mention 'Irish'.
Would just like to point out that these people are not actually Irish.. their descendants may well have been, but the group we are referring to, arent Irish.
If you listen to *insert PC word here* their accents aren't Irish.
[ QUOTE ] Among English Romani Gypsies the term pikey refers to a Traveller that is not Romani. It may also refer to a member who has been cast out of the family. If a member of the family is hot headed or a thief or a trouble maker or brings misfortune on the family, then a family council will be held and that member will be cast out of the family and will have to stay out of the way for ever more. They are regarded as never having even been a part of the family.[12]
[/ QUOTE ]
in which case, we are using it pretty jolly accurately, surely?
[ QUOTE ]
In the late 20th and early 21st centuries, the definition of pikey became even looser and is sometimes used to refer to a wide section of the (generally urban) underclass of the country, or merely a person of any social class who "lives on the cheap". This seems to be the meaning intended by Stephen Fry in an episode of QI, grouping together "hoodies, pikeys and chavs", and intimating that these people are of a sort who "go out on the town, beating people up and drinking Bacardi Breezers".
[/ QUOTE ]
Good Lord, I thought Stephen Fry was the arbiter of all things uberPC. I expect he'd be chuffed as muck if someone made similar comments about gays. Not.
Surely ignorance is rife throughout the whole of society? Calling fat people lazy, rich people toffs, horsey people snobs, blondes stupid blah blah blah.
People always tar types with the same brush, however righteous you might be.
The point the OP was making was not IMO racist. Merely p!ssed off and annoyed there are types of people who believe they are above the law and can do what they please and where the wish to.
I have seen travellers behave in the most disgusting way including taking a sh!t infront of a queue of traffic.
I firmly believe you would never see a true Gypsy behave like this. I certainly never have. Those I have met have always come across as
lovely people and care for there horses and environment.
Think a bit of a grip needs to be taken here. People cannnot behave as they please and then play the race card when it suits them regardless of skin colour, background etc.

I think you are forgetting that Irish Travellers are a race of people, and a race that regularly get a lot of abuse (as clearly evident on this forum recently...) So comparing the terms pikey and geordie is absolutely irrelevant.
[/ QUOTE ]
No its not....its identifying a group of people with certain chracteristics...ie demographic location...do you have to have a certain level of abuse then before its classed as racism?
So, for instance...if we all spend a day abusing geordies will that make it racism?
As far as I am aware...Irish Travellers would have no genetic differences to the rest of the indiginous UK population, so I am wondering how thay can be classed as a seperate race rather than a group of people with a different culture/tradition to the norm?
The term pikey may be insulting to irish travellers....but it aint racism.
P**** to me is a word about any scummy person who thieves, threatens, sets fire to places that have offended them, etc.
where we are from, and the area is more than rife with gypsies, travellers and P****s, the word p***** iwould say is highly offensive but not rascist (don't care what government says!), it is a discription of someone based on there actions, not their colour or creed. Can't say i discriminate between irish, scottish, english ...
People at work call me 'horse girl' ... it is a discription of my lifestyle or actions, it is exactly the same.
Gypsies - all the ones ive met been decent people, wouldnt dream of calling them P*****s!! they have some really nice horses that they show locally etc.
Travellers - all the ones ive met are duck and divers but i deal with many regularly, know several with tons of horses but all seem ok and care about showing there coloureds etc.
P****s are scum of the earth who will hold a knife to your throat and threaten to burn your place down if you dont do exactly what they want no matter how unreasonable!! having had over 5 yrs experience of it in my trade i have to say i dont give a rats arse if people THINK i am rascist for calling then p****s, that is there interpretation - not my intention. I call a spade a spade at the end of the day.
after too many altercations to mention over several years i'm afraid i dont give a hoot about p****s human rights or their "racism" rights either.

.. because there is a website that says so, obviously... derr!!
Oh dear, I'm with you p, before being on this forum P*key had no racial conotations to me, interchangable with chav, tramp etc etc you get the drift. Must be a down here thing!
[ QUOTE ]
I think I will stick to calling them Caravan Utilizing Nomadic Travellers. Just my opinion as I have had several unpleasant dealings with them.
[/ QUOTE ]
I think you're being highly offensive to those Nomadic Travellers of Undefined Origin who don't use caravans!
Round here, as i said before, travellers are sometimes housed on a certain street.
I've been wondering for ages why one specific family lived on a different street and didnt have much to do with the other families until OH informed me their son is homosexual and they've been cast out
I just think that's incredibly sad... off topic but I do feel sorry for them.
So, referring to what someone else said, does that make them the 'P' word to their fellow travellers, because one of them is homosexual??
Sometimes I just can't take it all too seriously
(and I love shake n vac)

PMSL I am very nearly a pikey

You have a whiff of dog blanket about you and your shoes need to be resoled. You enjoy garden centres and eating out at country pubs. Your quite well known at the local KwikFit and think nothing of sticking a Bart Simpson doll yo your reat seat window. You have often enjoyed a curry or kebab after a night down the pub and have used a doorway as a public toilet. It is likely that you have been arrested for a minor offence and count George Best as an idol. You are likely to have been educated to A level standard.

Love the fact that i'm now the 'PC brigade' who all should poke fun at, just because i'm not ignorant about racism.
[/ QUOTE ]
that's really not fair.
lots and lots of people have a problem with what you are saying, and are trying to extract an answer from you. You have given some bizarre answers to the questions, but not actually answered it.
the 'poking fun' is just desperation.
We have had the dictionary definition of pikey. We have had sworn affidavits that it is used without racist intent. We have had queries about the existence of a 'race' of Irish travellers. But you just keep saying 'it's racist because it is'

Sorry I know this is a serious debate but that nearly made me spit my tea over my keyboards.

dunno, but he'll get a job with the BBC no probs, he's so many minorities, he's almost extinct

Love it!
And sadly so true - did you ever see that top gear episode when Jeremy Clarkson went to a 'meeting' at the BBC in his tiny car? Now there were a mixture of minorities round that table - in a non-pc stereotypical kind of way.
