Any word can be used in a derogatory way towards a group or race of people. That doesn't, in and of itself, mean that particular word is racist in its own right.
'Pikey' isn't used exclusively for any particular ethnic minority or race - this sets it apart from those offensive words derived specifically from a name of a race. It can be used in a racist way, but so can any other offensive term.

But it is recognised by the government as a racist term towards Irish Travellers and Gypsies. Yes, it is used regularly but that doesn't make it right, IMO.

Irish Travellers would have no genetic differences to the rest of the indiginous UK population, so I am wondering how thay can be classed as a seperate race rather than a group of people with a different culture/tradition to the norm?

Travellers are an indigenous minority, documented as being part of Irish society for centuries. Travellers have a long shared history and value system which make them a distinct group. They have their own language, customs and traditions.
Straight from the horses mouth... pavee point website which is the official traveller organisation in ireland....
also according to my sister in law who wrote a thesis about them they are an indiginous group the same as the aborigines in australia....however they are just an ethnic minority not a race...their still caucasion so technically not rascism involved just discrimination....
i still stand by the comments a made last night there are times when G#po is to mild a word for some of the travellers i have come across tho....
Though as i said in the old thread i have heard positive storys from people about them particularly back in the old days when the still practiced tin making etc....the new generation are a different story or at least their is a large subset that cause trouble and hide behind the claims of discrimination....id say more but i suspect that would get this thread pulled to...
ironicly enogh when i say pikey over here it doesnt nessecarily include travellers though it is considered offensive as its ment in the same way as kn~acker and that is used for a much larger subset of society than the travellers...
The Roma over here are more likely to be called Gypsys though its not always ment as offensive just a statement to differentiate that they are nomadic roma not run of the mill romanian....
G~po is generally ment as offensive but to be honest if a pots acting black and looking like a black pot while acting in a unsociable manner il call it an effin black pot!

It was kind of ironic. I hadn't been in the least aggressive, I had merely held to a point that I considered g***** racist but pik*** was fine, because, IMO, one was about a racial group and tother wasn't.
At which point someone, can't remember who, never take much notice of who, really, ranted on feverishly about my being aggressive and the legal position and no court in the land and I ought to be taken out and flayed (OK I'm making it up now
) and then told me to stop putting my point so aggressively.

I used the "p" word once on here and got a PM from Admin telling me that the Courts had decided that the word is racist and I would be banned forever from HHO if I used it again...
Whilst we are all getting on our high-horse.......the term 'chav' is pretty offensive since my understanding was it was used by councils standing for 'Council Houses And Violence' and is a derogatory term used against low-income families.
if possible could you post links to government web sites which confirm that Irish Travellers is a recognised race, and that pikey is classed as a racist insult please, as you seem to have a lot of official information regarding the issue which no-one else was aware of.

While recognised as an ethnic group by the British government, interestingly they're not recognised as such by the Irish government (instead seen as a 'social group')
I'm still trying to find a piece of government documentation indicating "pikey" is officially deemed a racist term.

and so is referring to anyone who lives in a council house as 'trailer trash' which has been used on this forum.
In other words, you can offend anyone you like on here, call them what you like, so long as they're classed as british...

You should know by now that if you're a white, heterosexual, married, british, christian tax payer, it is permanent open season.
and despite being all of the above, I am also one quarter true Roma, one eighth Scottish, one eighth Welsh, the balance made up of English mongrel but with a Manx paternal surname, which must have come from somewhere.
