Copied from Essex Horse riders FB page. This is the 2nd one is 2 days! the first looks like he will be going to Ruby's previous owner.

FREE TO A GOOD HOME: 13.1 new forest 18 year old bay gelding, possibly be able to do light work on bute (as supportedy by vet). Unfortunately he developed ringbone last summer, real lovely chap with lots of character
 
Exactly. The poor Horse deserves better. I asked how long she had had him for and I just got the reply "Why are you interested in him then?" deffiently not, I already have 1 lame Horse to deal with.
 
Makes me sick, My horse was recently diagnosed wiht ringbone and management is key... They dont seem to give a flying monkey where it ends up :mad:
 
This was her reply to me "I'd like to think I could judge other Horse owners, who have the same welfare values as I do."
 
It completely defeats me how easily people just give up on these animals simply because they're seen as being of no use or they just do not want to support them anymore...
But at the same time, I know someone in a similar situation. At a local riding school there is a pony, about 16 or 17, who has developed cancer in the last year or so. Although he could stay there, they don't see that what he has left of his life (vet suggests a 2-3 more years) would be very enjoyable in a busy working environment, so he is FREE TO A GOOD HOME as a field companion.
Although there are genuine cases out there, it really upsets me to see any horses where the owners have just given up :(

That is just gobsmacking. The welfare values that mean that you are willing to risk him ending up god knows where? FFS. Do people have no sense of how deluded they are and what the current horse market is like even for healthy younger horses?
 
and that you get "at least your trying to rehome and bot just having him put to sleep xx" - when we people understand that putting a horse PTS is not the worse thing to happen
 
They make me sick! They won't know if some charming person comes along offering a forever home, takes the pony butes it up and sells on, or sends it for meat to make money! When will these people take responsibilty for their animals? Well done for trying OP!
 
I've given up commenting on that as everyone else on the page seems to think its ok so it's falling on deaths ears!
 
Funny how you rarely see adverts saying "Wanted lame field ornaments which need medication to be vaguely comfortable. Bring them all to my house and i'll pay for their life-long care". Oh, wait, you do see adverts offering good homes to lame and problem horses.... They are dealers!!!

When will people get it that no one else wants their lame cast-offs and stop trying to pass them on. :mad:

I agree with everything said here.Its disgusting and VERY heartbreaking to see this happening. If you cant keep it PTS its kinder and at least you know the end of the animal.
Should be some kind of law about giving horse/ponies away.There are loads of people out there including myself who have their horse missing and do anything to get them back and then these selfish people just dont care what happens to the poor pony they are throwing away to goodness know who and a unforseen future.Grrrrrrrrr they make me soooooo angry.

I do wonder why people are so reluctant to PTS their unwanted oldies/unsound horses. Is it because they can't face it, are worried about what their friends/fellow liveries will say, or is it because they simply don't want to pay for it? Let's face it, unless you take a horse to Potter's, the cheapest option is the hunt that will cost at least £100.

I think maybe it could be any of those or all of them, for me though I wouldn't PTS because I would want my horse to still have the opportunity of a good life with some, however... I would also be very picky about who my horse went to, I would have a contract with the new owner and I would check on the horse regularly to make sure he was ok and still there.

I dont agree with people who keep horses alive that are clearly suffering and need to be PTS.
 
Don't get me wrong, Romeo, I don't think all old and/or unsound horses should be put down. I wouldn't do that to any of mine if they became old or unrideable BUT if, for whatever reason I could not look after them myself anymore, I would PTS because I wouldn't expect anyone else to look after them. If someone I knew well and trusted needed a companion, that would be something I would consider, I certainly would not be advertising on the net for all the dodgey dealers and meat men to see!

What I hate more than someone putting their horse to sleep are those who have had the use of the horse in it's young, sound days, and then expect some complete stranger to take over it's care and costs (including it's eventual disposal costs) when it's no longer of any use to them :mad:

Its nice to hear someone say that for a change, as I come across alot of people who do think that as soon as the horse is old or injured they should PTS :mad:

If you cant look after the horse anymore (for what ever reason) why end its life? I believe if your careful the horse can continue to have a good life with someone else...The owner must be honest about the horses history though.
All the horses I have ever had have been given to me by people who no longer wanted them.

I completely agree that it is disgusting when people get rid of horse either by selling it or giving it away just because it is old or injured (usually by doing something the owner has told it to!) :mad::mad::mad:

I hate seeing things like that :( poor horse.

When Ned gets old, or becomes lame I'll still want him! He's my pride and joy, even when I can't ride him. My dog is old, fat, snots on the carpet, costing us hundreds and smells bad...but we love her and until it becomes unfair to keep her alive, she will be with us.
I can't fathom why people give horses away when they get old :(

Sorry but I dont agree with most of your statement. And its very judgemental. If you own a horse that becomes unrideable due to illness or injury then the owner should do the right thing by the horse and either care for it for the rest of it's life or have it humanely pts. There are far too many of these types of horses clogging up rescue homes as it is. It's a really heart wrencing decision to have to make but it's called doing the right thing and not passing on the problem to somebody else.

Far too many people keep their horses going long after they should have had a dignified end and horses very rarely pass away peacefully. If I had endless pots of money and acres of land I would keep my unrideable horses, and they would still have as much attention lavished on them as they've always had. However the reality of the situation is that I dont and unfortunately my mare will be pts at the end of the summer. And it's not because of anything I made her do!!"!

There are more options then to either keep the horse or PTS....
I think some people are very blinkered, yes people should do what is best for the horse and if it is suffering then it should be PTS... BUT if the horse is healthy and has a good quality of life I think its very selfish of people to assume no one else can look after the horse better then they can and the horse is better off dead...:confused::confused:

I do not agree with people hiding a horses history or problems to give it away to someone who then has to deal with it though.

The end comment about horses being destroyed through injury from owner was because I have come across cases were a horse has sustained minor injury whilst competing and was then destroyed when the owner no longer wanted it and it couldn't continue at that same level of competition instead of being re-homed to someone who didn't want to compete or at a lower level.

I feel your pain tic tac, im pretty sure this will be my oldies last summer, she found last winter a bit hard and im not sure i want to put her through another, so i think it very likely the back end of the year, a double dose of danilon out for a charge about the field with her buddies, a big feed and then pts, she will then be cremated and her ashes buried in the field
