Fibroblastic sarcoid - emergency or not?

Noticed on my gelding this morning - I’m fairly sure it’s a fibroblastic sarcoid (from seeing them on horses at previous yards). Would you be getting the emergency vet out this weekend, or waiting until Monday to phone the vet?

Also, if anyone has any experiences of this type of sarcoid, I’d appreciate hearing about them. Whilst I’ve seen them before, I don’t know how they’ve been treated and whether it’s worked. Want time to prepare myself!

Open and bleeding?

Take pics, phone the vet and ask for advice. Unless it can readily be banded, I doubt there's much an OOH vet would do, but I could be wrong.

Meanwhile keep the horse in and away from flies as best you can. Flies can both irritate it and spread it to other horses.

I'd expect lasering to be the treatment of choice, but that depends on where it is and other factors. It's not a great time of year to have lasering done due to the flies, but if needs must, it can be done.

Good luck.

I wouldn't get a vet out today but ring now or on Monday for an urgent appointment. I would ask your vet to take photos and get them off to Dr Knott asap to find out what you are looking at and what the options are. I wouldn't take just the vet's diagnosis of a sarcoid however good the vet is. I would want pics. sent off.

My vet is a horse vet and I trust him completely. I thought I had a sarcoid, he thought it was a sarcoid but of course being an excellent vet he still sent pics off and got advice. Dr K didn't know, he wasn't so sure. He advised what should happen and when it went away to the lab it turned out not to be a sarcoid.

if you go onto the above under "sarcoids" there is more info.

Don't start worrying about what the different treatments are until it has been correctly identified and you know which actual treatments are possible for that type of sarcoid. That is the time to start considering how you want to treat it.

Breathe, don't panic and don't start googling horror stories. It rarely helps. (and whatever you do don't even think about home remedies or toothpaste until you know what you are looking at) Good luck

Thanks everyone - will phone vet first thing on Monday for an appointment. Horse won’t stay in at the moment, but I will do everything possible to keep it protected from the flies. As ever, it’s happened happened at the most inconvenient time!
