Field and mud query

Hello. I have recently moved to a new place and the field gates are in a bit of a state with deep mud. I am wondering whether to put down rubble underneath the surface or invest in some grass mats. Just wondering what other peoples experiences might be and what they found works best? Thanks very much.

We have put down grass mats in one of our gateways and they have improved it but they have only been down a year and a half and I think I will have to pull them up and put them back down again as it has been really really wet over the winter.
