Field Breakout

Has anyone got any ideas on how to keep my horse in his field? He has electric fencing which has a fresh battery on & he is still barging through it. Short of going to the expense of post & rail, has anyone got any suggestions?

and come spring, you'll be chasing your horse around it's field trying to catch it !

No idea's or suggestions other than to say give hay or more hay in the field? I think you'll find that it's the time of year and this horrid weather we've been having. Both my two have been fence hopping or busting out of late because they want to come in. It seems that alot of horses are testing our patients at the moment!

Have you tried attaching a length of thin chain to the front of his rug to conduct the electric better, give him more of a zap? Assuming that you have not got snow settled on the electric tape or anything else shorting it out?

Is he rugged? I know my cob will go through electric fencing in his rugs as he doesnt feel the shock! So I have had to sew in a small piece of electric tape to the front of his rug, so that it zaps when he tries to lean on the fencing! Other than that are you using the wide tape, just a thought. I know what a pain it is.

take his rug off and wet him he will get a shock then!!! touring whilst rugged and electric fence is a very common problem at this time of year! the grass is always greener on the otherside .... or at the moment whiter!!!

Ours all did that today. I spent an hour rounding them all back up and fixing the fence! Ratbags!!

I think its the rugs too - I saw my pony leaning on the fence - he wouldnt feel anything through his thick rug!!

Thanks guys. I'll try the electric tape idea. He tends to like playing with everybody at the best of times, & with the snow the way it is, I think it's probably boredom - not that it helps at the mo!

Just a thought & I'm probably being thick, but have you sewn the tape to the outside of the rug or on the inside next to his skin?

On the outside of the rug, chest height. A wide piece if you have it and then hopefully when he goes to lean on the fence it should connect and give him a jolt.
Yes sorry should have said you leave a bit to poke through the straps on the front of the rug to go underneath next to his skin (sounds complicated but is very easy to do).

I would think you sew it to the front of the rug and bring it onto the inside so when he leans on the fence he gets a poke on his chest.
I don't attach the tape to the rug. Just loop a piece round the chest.

My electric fencing (on wooden posts) got completely and utterly trashed by deer recently and the yearlings decided it would be fun to go walkabouts in the forest.

As I am not messing about in this weather tracking down wretched ponies, or re-fencing, they are confined inside a round pen for the duration. It does have the added bonus that the deer can't get in for the hay either which is what they were after in the first place. Now they just prowl around outside picking up stray wisps.

I had to resort to Electric Rope as the top strand at the very least. I had to have 3 strands too as they would go under, over or through. I have been through that pain and torn my hair out over it.

Wish I'd thought of the of tape on the rugs.... I may still have to do that...

[/ QUOTE ]Sounds to me that your electric fencing has never worked properly. The livestock must develop a fear of the wire, even if this means deliberately luring them onto it!.I visit so many stables and at so many ,hear the crack of shorting out fencing. It takes constant supervision to ensure that the maximum voltage is reached, let it fall and livestock cease to respect it.

Thanks everyone for your ideas. We turned him out with electric tape around the front of his rug & it worked a treat. He pushed into it, got the shock of his life & went galloping around the field. Now he won't go within 2 yards of the fence! Perfect!
