Hi all - our YO has just had our fields cut for hay (yes very late as farmer missed the nice weather in June and last week was first chance since!!). As title says really - how long should you leave the field before you graze on it again?

Not very late at all - in the UK hay is being made later and later - Jun normally produces a very low yield unless the fields are rigerously fertilised and all stock taken off in Feb. I put horses on as soon as the hay is taken off. Perfectly safe- the only cut grass that is left is hay and totally safe

Thanks both - thats what I thought to be honest - YO wants us to wait at least 8 weeks!!

I can see his point as you don't want them to eat it all off in a week which they will do if it hasn't grown enough and you'd need to supplement with feed. Our hay has been off a fortnight and I wouldn't want them back on it for at least another month. It all depends how much space for how many you have I suppose.

Thanks all - I am not bothered about putting mine on yet - its others really - I restrict my horse and bring him in in the day - and when I do start to use my share I will defintely be strip grazing.

our horses get put straight onto the fields to eat rouund the edges then get taken off untill we get a second cut then it gets slurryed left 3 days and they go straight back on
