Hello - as may be seen from my other posts, I am currently preparing a field (aka rough hillside!) for the arrival of my first pony:).

The field will open onto the back of a farm with a little road in front and other horses in fields close by. so I want it to be as secure as poss as if the pony or companion escape they would be off.

I was thinking that a sort of double gate enclosure system might be best? But in practise I'm not sure the best way of making this? The main gate will be a standard field gate with post & stock wire/electric fence to either side. I can't afford a second field gate, but maybe an electric fence gate? Any ideas or pics if you've done this yourself?

Thanks!

I did this 2 years ago and double fenced with 2 gates. The previous owner used electric tape with an electric tape gate. All the fields locally use one arrangement or the other.

Hi. Thanks for letting me know. Yes, I was wondering if electric might be a way to do it but then thought that if it was a relatively small space I might risk the horses accidentally touching it quite easily... :confused:Thank you.

If you use electric for the inner gate and proper gate for the outer one, then as you undo the inner one to take the horses through it, the charge loop will be broken anyway. Have something non-conductive to loop the electric lines onto so that the horses dont touch them and they dont touch the fence line. ideally have the energiser there too so you can switch it off when moving the horse through, but if not poss, using a proper electric gate kit you should be ok

I have electric pens in each gateway just in case another horse accidentally pops through! They are about 9metres square I think this is a good size as enough room to turn two horses at a time without worrying about them getting zapped.
It's a great idea, wouldn't be without mine.
