Hi all. I’m first time poster. I have a question and perhaps I’d be lucky to get some reasonable advice from you lovely lot.
im at the diy yard and herd where my mare is has 7 horses. Majority are good doers(including mine) and minority poor doers. The issue is that we do winter/summer field switch and all good doers are staying longer to avoid them to go straight on lush long grass(mind you they all wearing muzzles) while poor doers go to graze on lush field to ad least take the top off. It causing unpleasant situations among the owners of all horses, everyone bi@£ing at everyone, poor doers owners claiming we are overgrazing field that should be rested and we all should move fields together, good doers owners are scared as every switch new field has tall(knee/bum high) grass. I honestly feel poor doers owners implements rules where she expect everyone to just wear muzzle or cut turn out time for good doers if we so worried. We do have some laminitic and metabolic horses within the herd and some retired good doers. We have suggested to split the herd where poor doers get bigger field and manage on their own but they won’t have that option because they don’t poo pick or maintain it(most of the time good doers owners do) they said it is cruel to split the herd as her horse likes bigger herd. It’s literally comedy drama every time we switch. YO is not interested.
would anyone suggest anything that both groups of horses benefit?
we not allowed strip graze or track.
many thanks

Sounds like the current set up is correct - where the good doers don't move until the grass is eaten down a bit. Not sure why owners are bitching amongst themselves.
Because they claiming we are overgrazing the field that should be rested and poor doers won’t have enough grass in spring which isn’t true as last spring grass was so lush and tall even poor doers owners were scared to let their horses in. Another thing is we are”splitting the herd”.
most people are very understanding and reasonable but poor doers expecting everyone to act to their rules and move the horses together. Put muzzles on them or stable them for longer which isn’t fair. One horse(good doer) worn muzzle but won’t tolerate one, he will try to take it off or won’t eat(had ulcers because of that) My mare doesn’t know she can drink with muzzle on and on few occasions I found her dehydrated. I need to bring her in for an hour in the day so she can have a drink. In summer at night I’m going to the yard to give her a bucket of water so I don’t find her unwell again. All in all it’s stressful, inconvenient and unpleasant for some of good doers owners.

Doesn't she realise that grass stops growing on autumn and starts again in spring? She's talking utter nonsense!
I know. Most of us know that. It’s basically one rule, their horses are old, skinny, loosing conditions so everyone needs to make adjustments that suits their needs no matter that our good doers are in risk of metabolic problems or obesity. Honestly we(good doers owners) are very cross, YO won’t interfere even though some of us get literally bullied. Our ideal solution would be split the herd and have good doers together even if it’s on one field all year around but then they say(poor doers) that their horses like having big herd(so they can bully them as poor doers are big Horses and good doers are ponies)

In all honesty I would probably tell the ones with poor dooers to try and feed their horses adequately enough to not rely on the grass as the main source of food! As PAS said no benefit to be had in autumn winter really so thats when people usually let their fields rest anyway. If the poor ones are really not doing that well maybe they could be supplemented with bringing in for a few haynets? ?

There is one livery next to me, she has two horses and a pony on a bigger field than me and her field is completely poached. She mentioned to my friend who is the yard manager about my field looking so well. Then she approached me and asked why its still looking good! I told her because I actually bother to poo pick and keep my field clean and supplement hay on rainy days to keep him off the grass a bit ??‍♀? its not rocket science ?

That’s another big issue there. They don’t poo pick, clean water troughs we(good doers owners) do that and because we do that they don’t want to split herd because then they will be left to maintain they own field.

So, correct me if I’m wrong, but all the bad doers owners don’t poo pick - or reading between the lines this is just one owner? My answer will change depending on your response.
If there are multiple bad doers who don’t poo pick, then get the YO on board and tell her that EVERY bad doer owner poo picks and the good doers owners dont.
If there is only ONE bad doer who has a problem with moving fields, then I can understand tbat she doesn’t want her horse out by itself - work out a rota
It’s great that all the owners of poor doers are angels - sorry don’t believe that! You all need to work together, no pointy fingers, and come to an arrangement with YO

sorry I might not worded that properly, there’s a couple of poor doers and they owners don’t help with field maintenance. Good doers owners including myself do most of the poo picking ect. One particular poor doer owner is on this yard for quite few years and as far as I’m aware she has made herself a manager of the field and it’s up to her to decide when fields are rotated.
