Hi I was just wondering who kept their horses out 24/7 and what your set up was? I know that there are alot a variables in keeping a horse like this so I hope I have covered all areas.

my 20yearold welsh section d lives out 24/7 in summer but in winter she gets brought in but only due to her friend being ridden and she gets very worried. we also believe that its kinder for her in the winter to come in but i am sure she aould love to be left out as she doesnt really like it in as she doesnt get that much forage, as she fat she can look at food and get fat :( its quite annoing. the other horse at the yard lives out 24/7 he is a fine built horse (poss arab/TB X) he is clipped out, but just has a medium weight rug on.

Horse Breed: Mainly American natives (well, that's basically what QH's are;)) with an arab or two thrown in
Age:From 6 months to 22 years
Work:None to speak of
Clip:None
Rugs:MW, no neck
How exposed is field:Various paddocks, some with woodland and ponds, we live in a wind tunnel, windchill can make it 10C colder. Lovely, when the average daily temperature is -10C for 3 months or so.
Type of shelter:Some have run in sheds, the mares have natural shelter and man made windbreaks

I have kept clipped horses out before now, management varies according to the individual. Mine have been rugged, but not excessively. I think the key to keeping a clipped horse (in particular) warm is ad-lib forage and to a lesser degree access to shelter. My mares have managed very well with just windbreaks, but fortunately, although we have cold temps and snow we do not get the amount of rain the UK does:)

All the horses in the signature live out, centre photo was yesterday, only -4C so a lovely day for sunbathing by the pool :D
 
Hi I have kept my ID xTB out all winter even through the snow ( ouch ) as he has a locking stifle and is better off moving 24/7. He has a blanket clip as he's still being ridden and he's looking fantastic , being feed ad-lib haylage morning and evening and also a small feed of Allen and Page calm and condition morn and eve. He has a medium weight rug which I double up with an insulator underneath if it's really cold. If you feed enough forage to keep the central heating system working , living out really isn't so bad. Paddy lives out with a 19 yr old pure-bred Arab who's also thriving really well. Next step for us is a shelter.

Work: Light (hacking and jumping) but exceptionally hairy he is like a ware pony and was getting far too hot, if he was not clipped he would sweat just walking about in the field, clipped on vets advice as he was so getting so hot it was affecting his breathing when being ridden.
Clip: half face, all neck, bib and belly (eg chaser but with all neck taken off)
Rugs: dependent on the weather, he is like a furnace, when it was really cold he was wearing a rambo HW wug, but is now in a MW no neck rambo and will soon be in just a LW rambo Wug
How exposed is field: very sheltered, surrounded by woods and hedges.
Type of shelter: he has a wood to go into to shelter as well as high hedges and trees surrounding the fields.

most of ours live out, but only my comp horse is clipped, right out, he wears 2 stable rugs under a HW turnout, has good shelter from big thick hedges, he's 14 & a full TB, he loves it, & is much happier than living in, we have sandy well draining soil & stables for when we need them (although not enough for everyone)

the others that live out are either TB's mainly youngsters, & only 1 wears a rug, the remainder are naked (none are clipped) & my childrens ponies, who do wear rugs but aren't clipped

Work: Light (hacking 3 hours twice a week, schooling/longreining twice a week).
Clip: Trace - (gets very sweaty/is a hairy yak so off it came).
Rugs: None
How exposed is field: Very
Type of shelter: Trees but still very open

If she was cold, she would have a rug on but she's kept her weight on, has still been toasty and isn't miserable in the slightest :)
She had a rug on in the wettest weather (2-3 days) but no rug all winter.

Age: 14
Work: medium amount of work (nothing overly strenuous, a hunt or a bit of xcountry schooling) will be in full work..spring/summer
Clip: full clip.. (kept his furry legs tho)
Rugs: 2 med weight 1 heavy weight (hes weighed down ;) )
How exposed is field: has very sheltered and exposed spots due to hills, trees and hedges!
Type of shelter: stables if in dyre need but we rarely use them unless heading to a show or its particularly cold..even left them out in the heavy snow as drinkers in stables were even freezing over so thought theyd be happier out moving!!

He has lived out all year round since i have had him (7 yrs) and with proper feeding has never lost all that much condition and is a far happier horse than when he is kept in :)

All of them are fed ad lib hay and minimal hardfeed (balancer and chaff). They are all looking well for it

Work: schooling or hacking 1/1.5 hours most days

Rugs: in -15 he had 2 heavy weights on ,at the mo he has 1 heavy on
How exposed is field: in places very but there are bits that are sheltered
Type of shelter: trees, hedges and wind breaks

I have 5 but the others are out with out rugs ,with out clips, just hairy hippos
this warmblood is out 24/7 as he doesnt like being in on his own and the others dont like being in full stop , he also has a repiritary problem so is much better out and my shavings bill is now dramaticly reduced :)
