Pros, considered, opinions, recommendations please!?!? Have a tb prone to mud fever, new horse so not sure how copes normally but came to me with bad mud fever in June. Want to minimalise mud fever if possible. Have clay type soil. Usual routine with old horse was leave mud to dry and brush off. Worked fine for him but not so sure new boy will fare so well. Thanks all x

I used turnout boots on mine the first winter I had him as he got lymphangitis from mud fever! They did help keep his legs clean and dry; always hosed them off and had a spare set so could rotate whilst one set dried. He hasn't had any on the past two winters and I've either hosed off legs and dried off when he came in, or like you left it to dry and brushed off next morning. He's not had mud fever again since that first year. I think the most important thing to keep it at bay is allowing the legs chance to dry, therefore I'm not a fan on lathering in pig oil or vaseline as I think it just locks moisture in and prevents proper drying out over night!

Forgot to say! I used the Roma turnout boots, but have also used Castle ones, PE ones and Equilibrium close contact and found all good and stay on. Mine isn't a rag it around the field kind though so not sure how they'd fare if he was!

Thanks lewis2015, interesting to hear your experience. I may try them, purely for the fact that he had it so badly when I got him. He has a bit of a good about sometimes but is too much of a pig to run around too much! Agree re oil and Vaseline. Hope you have another mud fever free year, thanks! X
