We have just bought a field for our 2 horses and we would like to fence off a small area for lunging and riding. It's not a big enough area for a proper manège. We just want an area we can work in when the field is too muddy! I wonder if anyone can give us any help on how to make a workable area that won't get muddy or waterlogged and won't cost us a fortune!! Do we need to level it first and what would be the best topping to use? Any help would be gratefully received. We don't know where to start.... Thanks.

Welcome!

If you do a search on here you will find there are quite a few people who ride in their fields - so your question has already been (at least partly) answered.

I just used electric fencing and and plastic posts for my "school" in the field, I dont top it or roll it. They sometimes munch it down in the summer. But to be honest I cant use mine when the field is muddy as that is also clogged up as well and I wouldnt risk injury, over reaching etc when the ground is like it is atm.

So would say if you were allowed to ie planning permission if you need it, I would find a suitable surface, I suppose you could use wood chip but you would have to top up regulary.
