Hi all,
I have recently moved my horse from livery to my Mum and Dad's as they have a few acres and my other horse is there. I don't have a sandschool to use anymore but there is a field to ride in, it's mostly flat with a few lumps in with tufts of grass! Is it dangerous to school in a field? Also how does everyone who doesn't have a school manage in the winter? Does the field get too muddy/frozen to ride in? A few people have said to me not everyone has a school and it's fine to jump etc. in a field but others have said it's just asking for injuries? What do you all do?

Hi, I haven't got a school at present, although we are getting one as we are starting a livery. However, I have been riding on a grass field for years! We are very lucky that we are on light sandy ground so it doesn't get bogged down. But just take sensible precautions - i.e. check for rabbit holes, rubbish, horse shoes, etc etc laying around that could be harmfull. I do jump in my field, but not if we've had rain and its slippery, same with cantering. As long as you use your common sence then its fine! Plus my horse goes much better on turf than any heavy, boggy school!

I school in the field. It's not cut up though as don't ride in there when it's been wet.
You should be fine so long as you check the ground is ok and avoid any areas that are rutted etc
