I currently have 3 paddocks which i should rotate however, only one of them has any form of shade, so this one gets used all of the time along with one of the others. So i am looking to get a mobile field shelter that i can move around in the middle field to make better use of the paddocks;

1. If you have a mobile shelter do your horses use it?
2. What size should i get, i have one 17h1 ex-racer and a mini shetland paddock ornament?
3. How much did you pay for yours?
4. Do you often move your shelter?

Any advice greatly received...thx

Hi, I bought field shelters for mine & they love them... more in the summer to get asway from flies. If you look at www.nfed.co.uk classifieds they is a guy on there that does em real cheap, I got mine from him but have boarded mine out myself. I got 24ft by 12 with two 4ft opening at each end ( my original idea was if i needed in winter I could partition & put half door on to use as stables) I didnt bother in the end as they use them so much I dont need to close in. Also the two openings mean that no one can get pinned inside etc ( my lot are a friendly bunch but you never know!)
I didnt seek planning as I have no base.. literally put them up on grass in the field, neighbour complained( of course) Planing came round & told me I did not need planning permission as the was no base :)
Edited to add I do not move mine I didnt get skids as shelter were quiet big, I also have a mini shettie & a fast growing youngster 16h, plenty of room.

By law from planning consent the shelter MUST be moved and seen to be moved every 3 months or they consider a permanent fixture and if they see it or get it reported they will make u move it or make you dismantle it .

I was told I did not need to move them nor did I require any formal planning permission, the planning department sent me a letter confirming they had been out & view onsite & no breech of planning has occured.(That was last summer) I guess its different if different areas? A call to your planning department will put you right :)

Many thanks for the advice, i'm not so worried about the planning issue as i will make sure that it can be moved on skids as they can be a bit fussy around this area, its just whether the horses use them, size required etc.:)

I have recently got a 24x12 double stable on timber skids,It cost me £1500 and that included delivery and erecting..

I leave the doors open and if it's hot then i usually find both my 17hh ID and my 15.1hh cob in one stable..and the other stable empty..

I dont plan on moving it unless i'm told otherwise.

I have a mobile field shelter on metal skids. I couldn't afford to buy one so I asked a local retired joiner to make one for me, which he did for £500! The best £500 I've ever spent. Where we used to live it was moved between summer and winter fields.

It was moved on a flatbed trailed when we moved house. It stays permanently in the paddock it's in, and no, there has NEVER been a problem re planning.

Diamond Light - where did you get that information about it having to be moved every 3 months? And could you attach a link to the thread for everyone's info?

There was something in H&H online news which suggested planners were starting to clamp down on mobile shelters so it might be wise to get one that can actually be moved, even if you only move it if they tell you too. Also you have to be careful if you use your field for riding/jumping etc (amenity use I think it's called), as the planners could get a bit shirty over that too if someone drew it to their attention. There's always someone out there trying to put the dampers on something!

I have 2 shelters in 2 of my very small paddocks, these paddocks are linked to bigger fields.
These shelters are heavily used by current (and previous) Fuzzies in summer - they have been seen running in there less than 10 mins of being let into a bigger paddock for more grass - purely to get away from the flies.

However, they do not willingly use these in winter. Only popping in to scoff haynets which might be tied up in them - then scooting off to stand outside in the cold/wet/snow etc.

1 shelter is approx 22 x 10 & has been in place for 20+ yrs, with 2 x doorways.
The other is a new-for-old replacement (old one had just done 46 yrs & so was replaced this March when big fuzzy leant on a wall just a bit too hard:o ). Its 3.60m wide by 3m deep. Plenty of room for a big and small fuzzy to stand in (apparently!) tho I was not confident about leaving them like this to start with - they preferred the smaller shelter of the 2 when given the choice.

Good luck :)
