Hi

I am bringing two horses home from a livery yard in the next few weeks and have had a field shelter built for them. The shelter is partitioned and has metal gates so I can keep them in over night if I want to control their grass intake or if the field needs a rest etc Everything is ready except the flooring. There are so many choices; clay, earth, paved etc

Can anyone give me any advice on this, I want the horses to be comfortable if shut in, so am prepared to invest in the right type of flooring if necessary.

Thanks Patricia

oooh how exciting to have them at home !!

I have a large field shelter of 18x12 which is on my hardcore yard and then has rubber matting over the top - it has been down for 6 years and is almost as good as the day it was put down - my 2 big horses are shut on the yard/arena during bad weather so spend quite a lot of time in there and they also use it alot in the sun ! I have rings to tie nets to and also a pole hung inside on one side to put rugs over to dry . I dont use any bedding as they can wee on the arena which they always have access to and they sleep on the arena unless very wet and then they can sleep standing or lying in the shelter - it drains well if i do use bedding (used bedding before had arena built) and i think it drains ok as it is a porous hardcore underneath rather than concrete ! the only small thing I have to do is fill in holes that the rats have made occasionally in the hardcore (not in the mats) the mats look like new and sweep out easily.

Hope this helps, good luck x
