Winter is coming and its our first at a new yard. We have lots of grazing and the horses are allowed to live out all year although they do have stables if needed.

I have two pretty hardy types - a highland and a coloured mare of polish breeding who is already starting to resemble a polar bear.

I prefer to rug as little as possible, especially the Highland as rugging ruins his mane. They will both stay in light work throughout winter so will have some sort of light clip to balance warmth and work.

They are separated by electric to avoid him driving her mad. He has a hedge down one side and she has a tiny bit of hedge. They both have a tree, but trees are currently fenced off due to acorns, and he is the wrong side of his hedge and tree to get much shelter. I'd really like them to have the choice of shelter if they want it.

So, budget doesn't allow me to purchase a proper field shelter at the moment although I'm saving the pennies. I'm looking out for 2nd hand but nothing suitable has come up so far.
Has anyone done anything creative to create shelter? Any bright ideas?

We have some heras fencing knocking about at the yard and I'm wondering if I could use that with stakes as the basis for some sides and maybe attach some willow screening or similar to provide a little shelter from the wind etc . I just need to work out how to put a roof on and how to raise the roof a bit higher without flappy tarpaulins.

Otherwise has anybody used any of the temporary tunnel type shelters that you can get for about 400 which is basically a big tarpaulin over a frame. They don't look hugely hard wearing which concerns me.

That's actually quite a good idea! do you have a picture please !

I don't because my Manual of Horsemanship is in a box somewhere! I've never made one myself it's just one of those things that's stuck with me from when I used to read the Manual cover to cover obsessively. 😂

haha - well I will have to see if I can look our old one out as honestly that has really got me thinking it would be a very good idea for our 2 living out all winter to serve as a temporary shelter without worrying about it being blown over - yes the horses may have the odd munch but for the price of a bale of straw its a seriously worth a trial!! Thank you:)

I've been googling as a straw bale shelter got me thinking. You need to pin them through it stand them through otherwise they may eat the lower bales and the higher ones can then fall into them.

I was thinking of using the smaller bales without a roof on but positioned to use back shelter of hedge where there is an overhang & lay the bales as bricks - needs some though but definitely one to think about.

Having spent a fortune on a lovely field shelter to find they spent the whole winter ignoring it and putting their bums in the hedge instead I'd be looking for wind break type things, maybe a Y shaped heavy weight fence panel arrangement instead of straw. It seems to be wind that's worse than rain for them

Mine only ever used the shelter to get away from flies / heat in summer - stood out in snow / sleet / down pours
