Any downside to popping a spacehopper in the field for my 2 y/o old to play with?
He's in with a retired school master who's doing a lovely job of giving him some manners and I am considering a similar aged companion (once this terrible winter is definitely open) but poo picking tonight he's boinging around like a spring lamb trying to play with me so I was wondering what I could put in the field to give him a bit more do out there.

Someone gave me a giant horse ball for the 2 mini's, it was as big as them, they pushed it around but they really liked to push the tyre hanging from the tree :)
Downside for the giant ball is I was driving the ride on mower towards the storage area, the wind blew the ball, I couldn't be bothered to get off so tapped it <well pushed it tbh> with the front of the mower and it melted a hole in it and it fell on the floor, flat as a pancake
Little ones were watching me from the stables with that dreaded look that makes you guilty *She has broken it*

It's worth a shot. I got one for Gray as he is a pest in the field but he didn't look at it let alone play with it. So the yearling has it now and loves it! I'm glad I didn't spend £25-30 on a horse ball rather than the £8 for the spacehopper!

I just used to send my youngsters out of my personal space as and when they were being daft and/or rude. Each to their own, I suppose.

It is possible both to teach your youngster manners, AND identify it may have a need to play which you would like to find ways to fulfil, I suppose.

The down side if the videos on Facebook are anything to go by is that Horse tend to go head over heels over these balls etc. I often think I hope they havent done themselves a mischief! Either that or they use them as weapons :D

Thanks all, my kids have an old one so I'll chuck it in. If he uses it as a weapon on the retired one I'm sure it's something he'll only try once.

I was happily prodding him with the fork to get him out of my way so being rude wasn't the issue -just me wondering if the airs above the ground could be directed at something to add more fun to his day.

More fun to his day ^^

I found a battery operated bubble making machine in the attic, bought a £3 huge container of bubble stuff from Tesco, put in new batteries and put it on the paddock gate on a slightly windy day, all of them were fascinated but the one who was totally smitten with it was the one with cataracts - every time I turned it off he came looking, the only thing I could think of was the bubbles were really shining in the light as they blew across the paddock and he was really focused on that as he could see it. Whatever it was it made his day, can't be much fun having vision of looking through a bathroom window for him but he loved those bubbles flying about :)

I expected mine to fulfil any and all needs for play via normal interaction with other equines, and therefore ensured that they always had appropriate company and adequate turnout as part of an established mixed herd. Somehow this seemed completely rational at the time, but clearly I was utterly wrong, and have done untold amounts of harm to their psyches by denying them access to random pieces of heavy plastic to swing around and lob at one another. Just think of all of the concussion based fun that might have occurred! Oh well, too late now :p

Space hopper? Brilliant idea. But I can imagine it getting chased into a fenceline and all sorts of trouble ensuing.

Bubble machine? Total brilliance.

But I think mine would be happiest with a scrap car with the bonnet up to investigate :)

Yeah what is it with horses and car bonnets?!?! They love the things! Whether its to lick, grind their teeth on or sit on!

This is exactly what I did for the beastie - it gave him endless hours of entertainment and a reprieve for long suffering Ebony. I would also paint it with molasses occasionally and hang it from a tree... he loved trying to lick it clean

I had a space hopper that wasn’t needed so put it out in the field with five shetland stallions & colts. They had a brilliant time with it (including using it as a weapon), only lasted 2 days before a tug of war game ripped it in two.

I’ve also previously given them an unused gym ball, again great fun but short lived!
