Does anyone use them and are they safe? Do they actually break / detach when needed?

I've seen the Rambo ones on offer. I keep seeing horrendous facial injury pictures on Facebook of horses that have been turned out with a headcollar on. It's really freaking me out!!

I don't usually turnout with a headcollar but occasionally need to.

Far better to use an old leather headcollar, it will break. I would also take a good look at the grazing you are using. Hedge and post/rail would not worry me for a horse in a headcollar, but wire, electric and all the other rubbish that many people seem to use for fencing would.

The rubber band ones break. The Velcro ones do not. My horse towed a metal ring feeder round the field with one on and it was the metal ring NOT the Velcro which eventually "went". Luckily got away with it and don't leave head collars on imbeciles now :o (mini Shet wears one as he's hard to catch but he has the brains just to stand there if he ever got caught which he hasn't because he's not an idiot ;) )

After asking this same question a while ago, I now use the Cottage Craft ones which have velcro in a few places that comes undone if they get caught up. I don't turn usually out in headcollars but after my mare got caught on her door when tied up, I wanted something safe just in case. My youngster has taken hers off a few times in her stable, so I know they do come undone easily!

I would always rely on thin leather over anything else. I have used leather head collars in the past, I now use Kensington Breakaway head collars (they have a leather piece in them which makes them breakaway) as they're cheaper and I have a horse who sometimes is an idiot. :)

Thank you everyone, really appreciate your comments. Very interesting about the Velcro & rubber rings.

Looking at prices, I might just be better sticking to cheap leather headcollars.

I have used the headcollars with leather inserts on new pony in new field and prefer to Velcro type - not long term usage but until catching and routines established.

I use one of the velcro ones, but each time I put it on, I pull the velcro apart, and press it back together very lightly, so it's only just secure. The velcro is just too strong if you press it together properly, or if you leave it to get muddy/wet.
