My TB, 17 year old gelding is getting filled legs behind, they seem to take all day to go down so I don't think it the 'usual' type of filled legs.

There is a small amount of scabbing on the legs all round (don't think it's mud fever) and his legs appear to be sore to the touch.

I clipped his legs today so I could keep more of an eye on the scaps and he was really not enjoying me touching his legs. Tonight he has come in very sore, not quite lame but very uncomfortable. I hosed his legs off (he stands in mud in the field) and he was reacting to the hose too. Put leg wraps on and he showed his discomfort again.

Anyone have any idea what this could be?

Still sounds like MF and lymphangitis to me. My TB had this 10 days ago - no mud fever as such, but off hind was badly ripped by fencing a few years ago and scratchy snow had damaged a scar, infection had entered and leg sore & swollen.

Vet gave ab's and said Flammazine was bet thing to use on crusty old scar (scab is smaller than a 5p piece).

I'd get vet out if he's so sore.

Just googled Lymphangitis and it does sound like that could be the problem :(

I've never had any experience of it before? How easy is it to treat? Is it best to keep him in out of the mud until the vet has seen him?

Poor boy :(

ETA - The leg that is the most sensitive has an old scar on it too that often opens up. Last year it became infected too.

2 of mine had filled legs this week. They are out 24/7. The weather had been awfull, so i think they were just standing on the hardstanding area all day long, not mooching about, this followed by the high winds which send them hooning around in the mud!

Within a day they had gone down a lot, and were back to normal within 2 days. Saying that, they were not sensitive to the touch (as i gave them both a good clean to make sure no injuries under the muid!)

Hope your boy is back to normal soon.

What do feed him? I ask because my lads 2 back legs filled dramatically and it turned out to be the micronised barley he was getting. He wasn't being worked much at the time due to weather.

Ooo...my colt had exactly this, just in the one leg though. I didnt think it was mud fever either at first. I had the vet out wednesday and she said it was a type of skin infection/MF.. Id been washing it with hibiscrub, slathering sudocrem on and wrapping them up already but she said to carry on washing in hibiscrub and use the special MF cream they mix at the vets - it contains steroids and antibiotics. Then just bandage during the day as hes out wandering around in a concrete yard and on some hardcore that gets a bit mucky. He's also on a danilon and antibiotic course.

Day 2 and the scabs are flaking off really easily, the swelling has subsided and is looking 100x better.

Now my other boy has come in with another swelling on his hind leg that looks like he's banged it or caught a kick.. never ending cycle of swellings and cuts at the moment - last month I had a filly run into an electric fence insulator and put a nice hole in her shoulder that needed 4 staples and then only a couple of days later when checking on my other filly found her with a small gash that had proud flesh. Hating this winter profusely at the moment!!
