My horse who lives out 24/7 has a filled hind leg- I have only noticed it this afternoon (and I am usually pretty quick to spot things like this) it isn't ridiculously huge but the definition between the cannon and fetlock isn't brilliant and the pasterns a bit up) it's not hot, maybe slightly warm but not hot and he seems to have decent flexion in it and doesn't appear lame. Our field has frozen into a rather unlevel, bumpy hard field i am wondering if he might have tqisted a bit funny and it has caused a swelling? I have covered it in Like Ice and he's currently munching on his night hay- any ideas?

I'd say he's probaby hooned around in the snow and as you have thought twisted it on a frozen rutt on the ground. Odd enough with how cold it is I know but cold hosing?

I'm all for cold hosing...just hose pipe is currently frozen, I will give him a good hose tomorrow- he seems fine, flexed well when i went to pick his hoof up, etc just it's up and i don't like filled legs. I don't know if he's been charging around but both horses seem to have been walking around carefullt today as the ice has made the mud vicious. That said, it doesn't take much to twist something does it? Horses hey, seriously, who would have them!?

Lol your right! Can't live with, can't live without

Thank you! I was panicing (well, it doesn't take much) I despair really, if I had read my post i would have replied exactly have you have!

IMO it sounds like the start of either mud fever or lymphangitis and cold hosing is not recommend for either. Check the leg over thoroughly for any sign of a crusty formation and take it from there.

Sounds like the start of mudfever to me too I'm afraid.

My mare was exactly the same last week. Caught it really early and it's practically all gone now and the swelling has been gone for a good few days.

I have carefully checked the leg and i can't find anything crusty. I think that his leg has gone down a little and he is sound on it- and it's still not hot. The definition between cannon bone and tendon is looking a little better tonight so that's something. Will keep a careful eye on it but hoping it will keep making steady progress...thanks for all your help.
