If a horse gets filled legs from being stabled during the night which do you think is better/more convenient/cheaper in the long run: feeding specific herbs daily or applying boots/bandages whilst the horse is stabled? And if the latter which boots/bandages would be most suited?

TIA :)

Personally I would be trying more turnout or even a bigger stable and several nets to encourage more movement if possible. Preventation is always better than cure!

If that didn't work/wasn't suitable I'd use stable bandages - but only if they're done correctly. (I don't mean to sound patronising but too tight bandages must be so uncomfortable and can cause all sorts of problems.)

Is your horse usually in at night? My horses legs fill when he goes from 24hr turnout to stabled at night. It usually goes away after 15mins of walking around the yard and after he gets used to the limited movement in the stable (bout 2 weeks) they stop filling. Just my experience though :D

Totally agree about decreasing stable time and increasing movement but the livery rules don't allow it during the winter. I like the idea of several haynets though. Thanks :)

Like yours he is out 24/7 during the summer and this is the first winter I will have to bring him in to be stabled at night. When he is stabled during the summer (eg. for a show the following day) his legs fill during the night and they usually go once he's been walking around for a short time. Maybe I'll be lucky and his legs will stop filling when he gets used to it too.

its the cheapest option to :p lol ... My horse has been in at night for a while now and the filled legs have gone now woohooo!!!

You could try magnetic boots. I have heard great tings about them from people who've had the same problem but ive never used them myself.
I try Clivers and Calendula if you want to feed herbs, they support the lymphatic system. I am a big supporter of herbs and have had many problems with my lot helped by using herbs.

I have to say I would leave them. If they go down quickly and have no heat in them then I would be inclined to leave them. My mare's legs fill when she is stood in but a 5min walk sorts it out. If you have to stable 24/7 then I would be inclined to bandage.

My mares legs use to fill when stabled, i found bandages a hasle to be putting on all the time so brought some magnetic stable boots, and these worked a treat and stopped the filling compltey.

I spoke to my vet about this and he said bandages are the best. I use eskadron climatex bandage pads plus whatever stable bandages are to hand. Magnetic boots have a lot of analogous evidence, but no actual vague semblance of scientific reasoning so, being a pernicity scientist, I won't use them :P
