Since moving to a new yard and standing in during the day my horse has started to get fluid swellings round the fetlock joint - pretty sure they are windgalls. I was googling this and some websites recommended feeding a joint supplement to help reduce them. Any thoughts? He is not at all lame and is only rising 5!!

ive found that windgalls usually affect older horse but i ca nt se ewhy if cold affect your horse.

if the swelling feels liquidyly(sp).. increases when stood for long period of time and decrease once turned out or ridden

i would more than likely say it is windgalls.

ideally if the hors ehas to be in i would try and let it walk about to get swelliingd down (walker, field, riding)

if they horse must be stood for long periods of time then i suggest bandaging legs when horse is standing.

i look after a horse who gets windgalls when stbaled overnight, so during the winer when hes in everynight his legs are bandaged, and they either ridden, walker or out inthe field during the day
but its important to tke bandages off each day ( i presume u know

)and checks for any sores etc

tip: if not confident with bandaging, or its too time consuming ther are some very good (leg wraps) which will give the horse support, we have some from shires, i could find the exact ones, if like. there fairly cheap quick to put on nd off and keep white legs white!

hope this helps

windgalls are not as harmless as some think they are, they are not just there as a cosmetic blemish they are there for a reason, some never cause any lameness or any problems at all, ever, and some can be an indication of something else. A friends mare had a rather large and singular windgall on a hind, went a little lame and then was scanned and had a hole in the tendon is nw a broodmare!!! They are worth keeping an eye on, they come up at any age and some are work related!! If they go down when the horse is turned out then wouldnt it be better to find somewhere where the horse can be turned out more???

Thanks guys, i have ordered the windgall supplement and will use a general joint supplement once he has finished this. If i am still unhappy in a couple of weeks i will call the vet. The reason he is standing in during the day atm is becuase i broke my ankle and he moved to a friends riding school to be looked after and he has been used in lessons by experienced riders for an hour a day to keep him ticking over. However the arrangement seems to be suiting him so he is going to stay there on this arrangement. Sadly he is a nightmare to catch so he has to come in in the morning with the other horses or he wont be able to come in later

He is in from 9-4 between 4 and 5 days a week.
