When I bought my mare the vet noted on the 5-stage certificate that she had filled udders, he though she'd probably had a foal but the dealer was sure she hadn't (dealer claims to have known the horse for a few years). Either way it wasn't considered a problem.
I have been told various conflicting things about this varying from "some horses just always have filled udders, nothing to worry about", to "that horse has definitely had a foal..recently".
(and my own personal worst case scenario "oh my god she's been knocked up")
Any views??

as long as there not hard hot or sore to touch i wouldnt wory about it if they are i would get the vet because it sounds like mastitus its quite common in horses even if they have never had a foal

The dealer claims the horse hasnt had a foal recently,, but did they say if they had covered her or not? or if there was a slight possibility? maybe you could get your vet to do some blood tests or something?

I used to have a mare with this condition who was believed to have had a foal, but still had milk at least a year or more later. Also she was quite sore (chafed) between her teats. We also wondered if she was in foal, but she wasn't. We put lanolin cream on the sore bit which cleared up, but I can't remember if the milk went.
