My veteran is currently on box rest, hopefully not for too long. He lives out normally, partly due to how much he stiffens up and how his legs fill.

He wears leg wraps which help a bit but I wondered if there was anything else worth trying?

I used to have huge issues with Robins legs swelling when in. I tried feedmark no fill. It is amazing! He starts with 3 scoops a night (he’s a big horse, you might not need this much) then gradually to 2 then 1 then stops over about 3 months. It is fairly expensive but Feedmark to various offers through the year so I buy them and keep for the winter.

I use the premier equine wraps and they work a treat, or bandages are cheaper option. I had a mare once whose legs filled up a lot years ago before they ever brought in the new easy wraps, the vet told me to take her off sugar beet and that worked a treat no more filled legs. So if your horse is fed sugar beet try dropping it for awhile and see what happens.

I also have used Feedmark No Fill and had good results with it. There's a money off offer on right now, and delivery is very quick. In tight times I have bought bog standard dandelion and cleavers from eBay.
Other people at my yard have used magnetic bands with good results but I haven't tried this myself.

Equisox worked really well for my mare. The ones with zips are expensive but so much easier than the pull on ones. She was prone to pressure sores and never got any with these.

Thanks folks, I’ve ordered a tub of no-fill, I usually get my Feedmark stuff pretty quickly so hopefully this will be the same.

He’s not fed sugar beet, but that is interesting, I wonder why that worked.

I’ve been googling for some sort of massage boot but no joy really other than the ice vibes. I’ve got some magnetic things somewhere, will have to dig them out, and his bandages and pads have been washed, hopefully they’ll do a bit more than the wraps.

the PE infra-red things are on offer at the moment, I don’t know much about how that works though.

Thanks for all the ideas!

I tried premier equine stable boots but his legs still swelled and ended up making the boots damagingly tight. I wasn’t sure he would eat the no fill as it’s quite a large amount but he loves it!

Am interested in this - young horse on box rest, 1 leg filled for first time 2 days ago. I am feeding speedibeet and minute vol of pony nuts - not sure what to replace the beet with chaff sent her silly, plus don’t want to spend a bomb as she is retired now. Will try that supplement but will it be counterbalanced by the beet?

Leg wraps or during the day if you're up more than once, magnetic wraps are brilliant. Unfortunately or fortunately:p my new yard does turn out for me, I'm only up once a day now so I can't really use overnight wraps unless I go and take them off. I've just bought the magnetic bands that can be worn pretty much all the time so I'll be interested to see how they work.

I splashed out and got some of the incrediwear socks as I was looking for something that I can use to ice (if you wet them then they act as ice boots) but a lot of people use them for filled legs / joints with positive results and you can leave them on 24/7. They would be a PITA to get on if your horse was fidgety but they’ve been super as an alternative to having to have ice boots ready to go post work. Can’t give a review for the filling side but as I say if you google or look then up on Insta plenty of people who have used them for that!
