18m filly has gone been down for 6hrs, we have had vet out she gave painkiller - no change. She is not cast, not colic. wormed to date. We have tried everything to get her up, hoists, bales, shouting etc etc etc. We are turning her every 2hrs. Temp is fine she is eating bedding and hay, stools good. Anybody any ideas advise???????

how big is she?? what happens when you try and lift her - does she try or just make no effort?? have they taken blood for testing to look for any underlying cause?? sorry for all the questions x if she is trying to get up when you help her its usually a good sign

could she be dehydrated?

she is 11h, havent done bloods as it is too late tonight to get them tested so we will do this tomorrow!!! she was trying with front but looked like 'dead legs' in hind, vet says if she has laid so long she will have pins and needles type feeling, we hoisted her up best we could but she didnt try to put legs down to stand. put bale between front and backs still no joy

vet thinks she laid down got cold, numb legs from laying on them ?????????????????? i dont know bless her, its cold cold shes in warm stable rugged up and stuffed with straw, just hope she fights to get up soon, thanks

Not broken a leg, god forbid? Any sign of a blow or bump to her head? Years ago, a veteran mare being ridden in my lesson had a stupid slip that wedged her UNDER the side fence of the school. It was freezing cold and sleeting I think. She tried a few times but couldn't get herself together to get up and she kept sliding further under the fence. Farmer came and tried to tow her out but no use. She had stopped struggling and was giving up hope when the farmer had a brilliant idea and asked if she had any special friend in the riding school horses. We all shouted CROMWELL. Cromwell was duly brought out and walked and trotted right past her nose. She mustered all her strength together for one monumental last effort and to everyone's huge relief, hauled herself to her feet. Thankyou Cromwell! She was very cold and shocked and took hours to get warm. Just wondered if your filly has a special friend that she might make one last effort for??

Got everything crossed xxx

Any news?? As she is small i can only suggest you try and get her hoisted with as much help as possible - then get rubbing her hind quarters to get circulation going as best as possible?? we have used old nz rug passed behind front legs and under belly to lift poorly foals before. make sure her front legs are pulled out in front of her and keep out of the way at the front as she may lose balance and fall forward (speaks from experience - it hurts when you get headbutted!)

Could she have hit her head?
A friend's horse was found lying in the stable, apparently pretty normal, but unable to get up.
After some time they were all v worried, a couple of days went by and eventually the mare got up.
The vet reckoned that she was mildly concussed and just slowly came to properly. It wasn't cold like we have just now tho'.
Good luck.

hi all, thanks for your help, but we had to have the filly put to sleep early this morning, we had 8 people trying to get her up hoisting her up as best we could but she wouldnt get her legs out. she had spent bout 14hrs laying down and lungs were getting flooded she was just giving up. Thanks again.

OP I am so sorry. This is exactly what happened to my in-foal mare 2 days before xmas vet checked her and there was nothing wrong with her, after 6hours of trying to get her up and the use of 10 strong people I could see in her eyes that she didn't want to get up. I really do sympathise it's not nice to watch them in that state. for what it's worth I believe I made the right decision for my mare and imagine you did the right thing for yours. Best wishes Gary

so sorry to hear this op hugs to you, must have been very hard my thoughts are with you. RIP little filly x
