filly gone down in stable, Not cast. cant get her up

Sorry to hear the news. Could it possibly have been EHV as recumbency (ie. lying down unable to get up) is one of the major symptoms. Thinking of EHV 1 in particular rather than 4 which is the respiratory one. Maybe the vet will do a PM.

that is a luvly story about cromwell. BUT i know the yard this one is from & they are all to thin. i wonedr if this was one that got to thin & couldnt get up cos it was floppy? i know there was another horse there that needed the vet cos it got really really thin. I think a few people are worried about them & are keeping an eye on them. lots of people think that horses can live on just grass in the winter THEY CANT! this was a baby who needs to grow. grass and a bit of old hay in the field is not enuf.

Interesting to note that redworm infestation can cause massive damage to the arteries leading to the back legs, causing paralysis. We had a rescue pony that came to us, with very poor circulation to his back legs due to worm damage. Coupled with poor condition, as you have alleged, then maybe this poor pony was just too weak to make the effort to stand.
