Filming a private lesson

I’m a little confused so thought I’d ask for your help and views here.
My daughter was having a private lesson and I film her on somethings so she can look back and learn from her mistakes. While I was filming her I was told by someone else that works on the yard that I wasn’t allowed to film my own daughter in a private lesson and that the instructor taking the lesson was allowed to on my phone. All because of the Mark Todd incident . I explained that this was for my daughters own personal use and not for social media use.
I would like to know your views on this please

I presume that the venue and the instructors have made the decision that no lessons will be videod, so that there can be no possibility of the tym appearing on social media. If it's their yard, then they have that right

This.

However the solution is to ask the instructor prior to the lesson so it’s clear what you can or can’t do.

I have to say, as an ex full time senior instructor on a very large yard, I found it really disconcerting to keep seeing myself in videos on social media that I had not been aware were being filmed.
I’d rather not be filmed whilst working, so I completely understand the yards stance on this one.

I have had the opposite experience. My instructor said she couldn't film me as they feel it is a safety issue for them to be using the phone/not focused on teaching. I was fine with this but it is a bit annoying as I usually go alone although when OH is off work he is my camera person.

Although I don't have many videos of me riding, I find it a hugely useful learning tool and enjoy being able to document my progress. I've always asked permission before filming lessons (and separately regarding posting to social media) but I think if it were a blanket ban on videoing I'd look elsewhere to ride tbh. It really is that valuable to me.

Not really sure what MT has to do with it unless they're thwacking their horses with bits of tree (or 'poking' them with jump poles)

The thing that got to me was the way in which I was spoken to as a paying client

My daughters instructor knew I was filming parts of the lesson and was happy for me to do this and none of my videos are put on social media. But totally understand where you are coming from ?

I think that’s the probably the thing I struggle with. Not once was I asked. Had I been, I probably would have said yes, but suddenly seeing myself on social media is quite galling!

I can understand both POV.

Ultimately they call the shots re: filming so if its important to you, you could look somewhere else - but if the instructor can film, I'd say that's problem solved!

I can't imagine why anyone would feel it is appropriate to film a lesson without asking permission from the RI first. How very rude!
When I was teaching full time it happened to me at least once a day! There are hundreds of random videos of me teaching on social media. Not one did I give my permission for. Very odd to suddenly see yourself!

Interesting.

I have often filmed/been filmed in training clinics for the rider's personal use. Never has any trainer indicated that it was a problem. That was before social media though. As a rider, I found it to be invaluable in helping me improve.

It hadn't occurred to me that trainers might be prickly about it now. Tbh, I'd walk if I couldn't have a lesson filmed for my own use, though I fully understand that plastering any footage on social media without prior consultation would be poor form.

I have been videoed by onlookers just schooling my horse and I do feel its intrusive. I don't use sites like instagram or facebook because I like my privacy. Its seems to be increasingly common to video professionals at work, such as instructors, vets and dentists etc. I'd rather just let them focus on doing a good job, rather than be preoccupied by how they might be perceived on camera.
There is some value in recording parts of a lesson, but the filming should be done with the professionals knowledge and consent. There's little point in filming the whole lesson anyway. Just be selective about filming and alert the professional when you press the on button.

Opposite experience for me- my RS instructor will gladly use my phone to video me and if I ask we will then swap and I’ll video her on ‘my’ horse doing the same exercise e.g. practice Prelim test. It is very helpful.
