am i the only one with a pony so filthy you cant get its rugs off?
if SWA wears his T/O for more than about 12 hours there is so much poo on/in the clips for the leg straps they wont open far enough to let the D ring out. his 3 turnout rugs are now sat in my utility room so that once the kids are in bed i can repair them all (ive had to cut the leg straps on all 3 now) the clips on 2 are the push in type & the third is a snap hook.

any ideas on
A) how he manages it
B) how to stop or failing that how to stop the clips jamming.

wont use Fillet strings on him (he has BIG issues with things around his hocks) & the last time he wore a rug with a fillet string the ensuing panic accrued 17 stitches, 2 broken toes & 2 brken rails (current feild only has electric)
i have put leg straps on his stable rugs now as they dont bother him.

How long are your fillet strings - mine are no where near the hocks, in fact they are all across the buttocks. If they were by his hocks I am not suprised he has issues, i am sure all horses would have serious problems with long fillet strings as they could easily get legs caught and heaven knows what damage they would do in the ensuing panic.

i have yet to find a rug that fits him and normally end up adjusting them to fit.
the silly tit has a habit of wiggling out of the chest of his rug & walking it off then panics as it slides back.
ive never had a pony or horse so bloody minded when it comes to rugs.

Does he actually need rugs at all? Just thinking that there is a high chance of an accident with the leg straps too if he's wriggling out of them.

Must admit I buy rugs that don't need legstraps and the filletstrings on mine I always found dangling next day so dont bother with them. Have only ever had one horse walk out off rug, still dont know how he did it, but it was a cheap make, so I save up to buy the best, sometimes, last years rugs go cheap in summer sales, usually because they are last years colours and my horses arent bothered about that.:D:D:D:D:D

Ive seen a horse wriggle out of a fully done up rug before, it was interesting.
Also is your horse grey haha, they tend to poo on everything. Mine cant have fillet strings as she poos so much on it, by the end of the day they have most of a poo on it hanging down. Bit discusting hah.

thanks for the help guys, last night i soaked the clips in hot water & then reattached to the straps but so they do up the opposite way (sewn on near butt & clips do up near belly) will see how this works today. bless the twit he was soaked this morning & shivering so currently got an underug on with his rainsheet over it.
not sure how the rug/SWA combo would work without a way of stopping the wind getting up undernieth the bum & making it flap about, as we are on very exposed area.

fingers crossed for the latest modification working.
