Final Colic UPDATE- FINDINGS

Thank you to everyone that sent me messages of condolences, hugs and best wishes. I am slowing starting to get over the loss of Blade, the tears are calming down and I can think about him without getting too upset... at the moment!

The vet rang and explained to me what they had found during the PM, the was nothing unusual or strange going on inside him, simply that the infection and peritonitis had really took a hold and that his kidneys and spleen had started to be damaged, they said it looked like he had started to go into multi-orgain failure. They said he probably went down hill on sunday night so quicky due to a twist in his gut (which they found) - this would have been very painful and irreversible, so I know I made the right decision for him.

I have thought about getting another horse and initially thought I would wait a while, but I find myself looking at horses for sale websites and I feel really lost without one. But then I think am I being disrespectful to Blade by looking so soon.

Anyways, just thought I'd let you all know the outcome of the vets findings. My boy was a super special little man who took such care for me, at least he is in peace now.

At least you can put your mind at rest that you did the right thing now. I can't imagine what you are going through, well done for coping!!

Don't feel bad about wanting another horse, it might help take your mind off things?

I hope you can gain some reassurance from the findings showing that you did indeed make the right decision.
As for looking at other horses you & you alone will know when the time is right. If anyone dares to say 'Oh how can you - it's too soon' or similar, just thank them for their interest, but tell them firmly that you need a horse in your life. I do understand what you mean about feeling that it would be disrespectful, but trust me, it isn't.
The only thing I would say about looking at other horses is don't buy in haste. Make sure that when you do find one you want to buy that its for the right reasons. I've known at least two people who've brought horses on the basis that they look like the one that they lost, and it blinded them to the fact the the animals in question were totally unsuitable.

thanks for updating us, good to know that you made absolutely the right decision for Blade. It sound like you are being so brave and strong. I too can't imagine how you must feel, but I think if it were me I would want to start thinking about a new horse, it is not a replacement or disrespect to Blade and you will always remember Blade. {{hugs}}

At least those findings have given you some answers that reassures you that you did the right thing.

It is a very brave and selfless decision that has to be made to end our horses suffering.

The sadness when they are gone is the high price that we have to pay for sharing o ur lives with them.

If it feels right to be having a look round at horses then no one at all has the right to judge you... You are not replacing Blade just filling a huge gap that he has left behind.

Thanks for the update, and glad you are feeling a bit better. From the findings, he didn't stand much of a chance...and at least you had him PTS when he needed it - well done.
As for looking at other horses - nothing wrong with that...but don't rush into buying one too soon...take your time. Perhaps if you are missing the yard etc...you could share a horse for a few months?

Thanks for the updates, you've been very brave right up to having to make that hard decision. I think your right to get looking for a new horse if you feel ready. The way I coped with losing my lad was just to keep looking forwards, keep busy and its not disrespectful, people will understand just how gutted you are. Like others have said, be careful to buy the right one though!
