Well for all those who have followed the ups and downs of Jesper we've reached a decision.
On Tuesday Jesper retired. I got on and took him round the school for a leg stretch and whilst in walk and trot he was ok but not tracking up he physically couldn't canter. The vet suggested last time he came out that his hind suspensorys weren't great and it's now become clear.
For those who missed out a quick catch up - Jesper injured his LH suspensory aged 4yrs although recovered fine after treatment. Aged 8yrs we started a long investigation into his front fore lameness. He was bi-laterally lame although only 1/10th. MRI a few months later confirmed collateral ligament damage, worse in RF although present in both. After rest and treatment he returned to hacking aged 10yrs, however the combination of LH suspensory and RF collateral meant both were under constant stress due to him compensating and it seems he may also have injured his sacroilliac. In the last nine months he has been in and out of light work but each time he returns to work something else goes wrong.
I've got the physio coming tonight to check he's not in large amounts of pain (fairly certain he isn't as he's still happy). Vet is away in Spain for two months so will have him out on his return but only to confirm what we already know.
So Jesper is very happily muching hay and going out in his field. It's been a heartbreaking decision especially being that he's only 10yrs old. I don't know how he'll cope with retirement but we'll see.
To all those I've been PM'ing - keep your chins up. Just because Jesper never recovered doesn't mean others won't. And to all those who have offered endless support everytime I've asked for more treatment options or whether to put him on danilon (which we have done but only a low dose) thank you for your time and patience, I'm just sorry the story didn't have a happier ending.

Oh poor you. What an absolute bloody shame. You have been through so much with that horse. I hope that maybe its a little bit of a relief to have now finally made a decision as to his future. There is nothing worse than getting your hopes up every time you bring them back into work. Do you have anything to ride at all? Its a pity you are the other end of the country or you could ride one of mine.
Love to you & your Mum x

So sorry to hear your news I was just looking for your posts as Im not having much luck either.Im not in a position to offer retirement for my horse as we dont have our own land but might have to think about finishing ridden work.Hes miserable and so am I.He isnt enjoying his hacks which I am supposed to do another 4 weeks of doesnt want to walk out and Im having to nag constantly with my leg or whip.Walking has never been his favourite pastime he is lazy for a tb but I just dont feel he is right. The vet is out on 16th march so will stick to plan but Im not feeling very positive.
I hope Jesper enjoys his retirement as doesnt give you too much trouble

Thanks Joss. The yard I'm at have been lovely. The lady I normally hack out with has a very sweet pony and a nice irish mare so has offered me either of hers every weekend to hack and I've also been offered a very nice warmblood for hacking and schooling and a few others so I'll get by for now. Long term thinking about getting something or loan or share or even possibly a youngster but going to wait until the summer and see how Jesper does for now.
Cellie thank you - sadly he's not properly retired! He's still on livery in the same routine. In at night and out for a few hours a day. He wouldn't have it any other way. Will PM you.

sorry marchtime it has come to this, i've followed your posts with interest and i know you have tried everything with jesper and i am truely sorry it has not worked out for you both, just maybe a good spell of Dr. Green will do the trick ? i have collateral ligaments issues too. at the momment things are on an 'up' and all looking well with my horse - he's nine. but i am well aware that this is a very difficult injury

Thanks blackned. I don't think he'll ever come right even with Dr Green. I had the physio out last night who agred his sacroilliac is also showing signs of wear and tear and she thinks it is best to retire him.
Collateral ligaments don't have to be the end of a horses ridden life. I think had Jesper not had the previous hind suspensory issues he probably would have been a happy hacker and low level dressage horse for a few more years, but with the previous injury the odds were against him and we were always on borrowed time.

Wow, it seems it most cases they get one injury after another! I've not recieved good news with my young mare and future doestnt look good for her neither.
Sorry to hear about ur situation to, its just such a shame nothing more can be done.
